It took a while for the engine to warm up Thursday, but world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport slowly cut down on the unforced errors to defeat No. 7 seed Nathalie Dechy 7-6(2), 6-0 to reach her eighth career semifinal at the WTA stop in Indian Wells.

"I had a comfortable tiebreaker in the first set and I got a lot of confidence from that and it kept growing," Davenport said. "I let her back (in the first set) so many times. Both games up 40-love, was serving, got broken both of those. Once I held to get to 6-all, I never really looked back from that point."

The win earned the American a semifinal meeting with the other hottest player on tour, No. 3 seed Maria Sharapova who doused the hot-handed No. 20 seed Mary Pierce 6-4, 6-3.

Sharapova upped her record on the year to 16-1, reversing a loss to the Frenchwoman at last year's US Open in their only previous meeting.

"She has a few favorite (service) spots, and I think I picked up on those," said Sharapova, whose return of serve was key against the former Australian and French Open winner. "I've seen her play a few matches. Her serve usually goes down the 'T.' I basically tried to cover those serves, but you still have to win the point."

Scheduled for Friday in Indian Wells are (4) Dementieva vs. Clijsters (Belgian leads meetings 5-1), (1) Davenport vs. (3) Sharapova (Russian leads 2-0), and in doubles (Q) Kirilenko/Salerni vs. (2) Petrova/Shaughnessy, and (1) Ruano Pascual/Suarez vs. (4) Raymond/Stubbs.

"Each match is tough and each match is different," Clijsters said. "The next thing I have on my mind is (Elena) Dementieva. So I'm definitely not thinking about winning the tournament, not at all, especially not in the situation I'm in now."

Federer Advances to Face Canas, Agassi v Hewitt Today at ATP Indian Wells

Those pining for a test when No. 1 Roger Federer faced the resurgent No. 29 seed Nicolas Kiefer Thursday were silenced when the Swiss manhandled the German 6-4, 6-1 in barely over an hour.

Federer is now 24-1 on the year, and looking the favorite to collect his fourth title of the year.

"I am so far very good, I haven't lost a set," Federer said. "That is always good. Sometimes, you win matches if you're No. 1 in the world, you still don't feel very happy. But this week has been very good. I like the surface."

The world No. 1 will face not-so-surprise semifinalist and No. 14 seed Guillermo Canas in the next round after the Argentine ousted No. 6 seed Tim Henman 7-6(1), 7-5. Henman looked to be battling nerves in committing 51 unforced errors against the Argentine, who he has now lost to five times in a row.

Up a break in the second, Henman gave it back before serving at 5-6, sprayed a simple forehand wide to end the match.

"I feel like my game style should suit me well playing against him," Henman said. "But my level throughout was just not good enough. You have to give credit where credit is due and he certainly is a great competitor. He makes you hit those extra shots and that caused me to miss a few volleys that I normally wouldn't miss. The execution of a lot of my shots was just poor. It's as simple as that."

Canas, who enjoys seeing Henman's face at the net with his arsenal of passing shots, chalks up the streak to the Brits game being a nice fit.

"Maybe I play better the important point against him," Canas said. "Maybe I have a little bit luck. Maybe the game he plays is good for me."

Winners in doubles quarterfinal matches Thursday were (1) Knowles/Nestor (d. (6) Paes/Zimonjic in three), (3) Bjorkman/Mirnyi (d. Argentines Etlis/Rodriguez in three), (4) Bryan/Bryan (d. Allegro/Kohlmann), and Aussies (7) Arthurs/Hanley (d. (2) Black/Ullyett 7-6 in the third).

On tap Friday in IW quarterfinal action are (9) Agassi vs. (2) Hewitt (career head-to-head tied 4-4), and (7) Moya vs. (3) Roddick (A-Rod leads 3-1, with all four encounters going three sets), and in doubles (1) Knowles/Nestor vs. (3) Bjorkman/Mirnyi, and (4) Bryan/Bryan vs. (7) Arthurs/Hanley.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
While Serena Williams get steamed at the mention of rival Maria Sharapova, insinuating she only lost to the Russian in last year's Wimbledon finally because she didn't try her best, the ego-maniacal American can get further ruffled in the knowledge that neither she nor Sharapova were in the Yahoo! Buzz sports search Top 20 Thursday -- the lone female tennis representation was, of course, Barbie web tennis queen Anna Kournikova...India's version of marketing machine Maria Sharapova, Sania Mirza, has signed her fifth endorsement deal, becoming the new brand ambassador of Tata Teleservices Limited, a leading private telecom company. It is the fifth endorsement for Mirza after GVK, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Lotto and Malabar Gold, a Kerala-based leading jewelry firm. "It is a matter of pride for me to be associated with this group in the company of such (other) great sportsmen (promoters). It is obviously an honor for me," said Mirza, who joins cricketers Sourav Ganguly and Irfan Pathan as Tata Teleservices shucksters. "As soon as I come to know that this is becoming a hindrance, I think that will be the last endorsement I will be doing." Coinciding with the announcement, Tata Indicom launched the limited edition "Signature Series" handset "Sania Fone." Next up for Tata Teleservices, hiring a staffer to do spellchecking...Svetlana Kuznetsova on choking against Elena Dementieva: "Double fault is not about the serve -- it's about a mental thing. I didn't double fault all match, and I double fault in the last game twice because I don't know what happened to me." It's called choking, look the definition up in the dictionary with the picture of Amelie Mauresmo's face next to it...Serena Williams on drug testing: "I get tested every week for some reason. It's horrible. I hate it. For me, I wouldn't do any type of enhancing drugs. I'm way too into my body. It would make me fat. It's totally what I don't want to be." No comment -- sometimes it's just too easy...From the LA Times: "The (Roger) Federer match was put in that later-than-normal time slot because Federer is near to international rock-star status and the European television group that has paid for international TV rights to this event wants to be able to put his matches live into all parts of the world, especially Asia and Australia, as often as it can."...Martina Navratilova has a 5-4 doubles record so far this year...World Team Tennis will use an NFL-style instant replay during their season in July, with players allowed three opportunities to question calls per match.
