The two former No. 1-ranked Belgians, No. 7-seeded Kim Clijsters (d. (LL) Perebiynis 6-1 in the third) and unseeded Justine Henin-Hardenne (d. (LL) Chladkova), led the favorites Tuesday on the clay at the WTA stop in Warsaw.

"My first match on clay is always tough and I definitely didn't feel comfortable out there today," Clijsters said after winning her 15th consecutive tour match. "It's tough out there on clay and I feel I have to try 10 times harder than I have to on hardcourts, or grass even. Pushing off is a lot tougher for me, and especially today because the court was a little softer."

Henin-Hardenne said her biggest adjustment is moving from the green clay of Charleston to the red clay in Warsaw.

"(The win) gave me a lot of confidence for sure, but here the court is so different," said Henin-Hardenne, extending her winning streak to six. "It's almost like another surface. It was very dry and very slippery over there. Here, it's heavy so it's a different kind of play."
Other seeded winners on the day were No. 6 Nathalie Dechy (d. Maleeva) and No. 8 Silvia Farina Elia (d. (LL) Pastikova, bagel in the second), while No. 9 Francesca Schiavone was forced to retire against Venezuela's Maria Vento-Kabchi with a thigh strain.

Three qualifiers moved into the second round Tuesday in the Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko (d. (Q) Chakvetadze), Russian Maria Kirilenko (d. Benesova), and Czech Zuzana Ondraskova (d. Douchevina).

Other un-seeds advancing were Serb pin-up girl Ana Ivanovic (d. Sucha, baking a double bagel), Slovak Daniela Hantuchova (d. (WC) Kosinska), Israel's Anna Smashnova (d. Koukalova), and Polish wildcard Marta Domachowska (d. Razzano).

Scheduled for Wednesday are Farina Elia vs. Ondraskova, Clijsters vs. Kirilenko, Hantuchova vs. Bovina, and Smashnova vs. Kuznetsova.

Top-seeded Pennetta Falls, Krajicek Wins at WTA Estoril

The WTA stop in Estoril lost two of its seeds before they even got out of the gate Tuesday when top-seeded Flavia Pennetta was shocked by Ukraine qualifier Olga Savchuk, and No. 8 Virginia Ruano Pascual was ground down 6-0 in the third set by Czech qualifier Lucie Safarova.

Seeded winners on the day were (3) Gisela Dulko (d. Foretz), (4) Na Li (d. Cohen-Aloro in three), and (9) Jie Zheng (d. (Q) Nagyova from a set down).

Other unseeded winners were Argentine Mariana Diaz-Oliva (d. (WC) Gloria 1-and-1), Spaniard Maria Sanchez Lorenzo (d. Osterloh after getting bageled the first set), German qualifier Martina Muller (d. Marrero), and Ukranian lucky loser Katerina Bondarenko (d. (LL) Czink).

Moya, Ferrero Advance to Meeting at ATP Estoril

Top-seeded Carlos Moya (d. Mantilla, bagel in the first) and unseeded former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero (d. Baghdatis, saving two match points) advanced to a blockbuster second-round meeting with opening-round match wins Tuesday at the ATP stop in Estoril.

"I'm glad I've got a day off before we play," said Ferrero on facing Moya. "I'm still a bit tired form Barcelona. Of course it will be a tough match, playing Carlos, it always is when two Spanish guys meet. My confidence is getting better but it's not where it has been in past years at this time of the season."

Other seeded winners on the day were (3) Joachim Johansson (d. Calatrava), (4) Tommy Robredo (d. (Q) Cermak in three), and (8) Feliciano Lopez (d. (WC) Corretja from a set down).

Other unseeded winners were Argentine Agustin Calleri (d. (WC) MacHado 6-1 in the third), France's Paul-Henri Mathieu (d. (7) Novak), Costa Rican lucky loser Juan Antonio Marin (d. defending champ Chela), Italian Dave Sanguinetti (d. (Q) Condor, bagel in the first), Czech qualifier Tomas Cakl (d. Carlsen, bagel in the second), and Spaniard Al Montanes (d. (Q) Blanco).

"I tried everything to turn things to my side during the match, I had some opportunities to do it, but some how I couldn't get them," Chela said. "I felt lost on the court, and it is true that I didn't come here with much confidence. But I intend to keep working hard in order to be fit for Roland Garros."

One match was suspended, with Al Costa trailing (5) Nicolas Massu 3-6, 3-2 when the match was suspended due to darkness.

On tap for Monday are Costa vs. (5) Massu (to finish), Guillermo "G-Lo" Garcia-Lopez vs. (3) Joachim "The Jackhammer" Johansson, Tabara vs. (2) Gaudio, (LL) Marin vs. Calleri, and (8) Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez vs. Montanes in an all-Spanish.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Reuters reported yesterday that Belgium's Xavier "X-Man" Malisse received a four-week tournament ban from the ATP for the incident featuring "serious verbal abuse," part of the meltdown that got him kicked out of the Miami tournament. Malisse was leading in his match 6-3, 5-5 when the meltdown occurred, and he also received a fine of $6K...Wimbledon has increased their prize money to a record $19.3 million this year, and still says the women don't deserve as much money as the men: "We are delighted to recognize the current stature of the women's game," All England Club chairman Tim Phillips said. "Our decisions are always made on market forces and, in our judgement, this is a fair decision to make. The prize money available on the WTA Tour is still substantially less than that on the ATP Tour and there are only two tournaments in the world that pay men and women the same. You will recall from previous years that there are all sorts of issues we take into account, for example the leading women win a bigger proportion of their prize money because unlike the men they play the doubles as well. Women earn more per minute played and more per game etcetera, etcetera. The bottom line is you get all this information and you have to make a judgement." Bottom line is Billie Jean King has made her judgement -- she'll be in touch...At 18 years and 10 months, Rafael Nadal was the youngest player to break into the Top 10 since Andrei Medvedev on June 7, 1993...The Australian Open has cut the cord on its 100-year-old liaison with Slazenger, going with Wilson as it tries to open up marketing and merchandising avenues: "It is a significantly more beneficial arrangement," said Aussie Open tournament director Paul McNamee. "We will have growth opportunities in Asia-Pacific that we didn't have with Slazenger and we felt it was the right thing for us to go to the next step."...Tennis.com's Peter Bodo on his affinity for Andy Roddick: "I like Andy. I really want to see him do well because he's the best thing you can expect from an international sport choc-a-bloc with self-absorbed players who have been raised like veal and told over and over again that they're soooo much more than a big forehand, or atomic serve?told that they're talented, smart, handsome, witty, charming, and just generally, well, special, just because they're a big forehand or an atomic serve. You never get the sense from Andy that he thinks he's "special." Oh, he can be a real wiseass. At times, he appears snappish. And when he's not "into the moment," anybody standing within 20 feet of him will know it. He wears his emotions on his sleeve and gets a little fidgety, as if someone had surreptitiously released a handful of fire ants into the back of his Reebok -- whoops, Lacoste -- shorts. But Andy also has a dimension that is in ever-decreasing supply in this era of spin, hype, and product placement. He's authentic. And that's a refreshing quality in tennis stars. Or anyone else."...ESPN has extended their contract with the Australian Open to 2011...Mark Woodforde will be the new coach for the doubles team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Todd Woodbridge, which has insiders scratching their heads with the relationship between Woodbridge and Woodforde: "People from the sidelines can see better, they can point out what's going wrong and suggest what can be done," Bhupathi told The Telegraph. "With somebody of Woodforde's stature available, we thought it prudent to take his help. He didn't travel for three years after retirement and then had a short stint with the Australian Fed Cup...now he's ready for assignments."...TR.net's Matt Cronin on the Indian Wells event possibly going to China: "Selling IW to China would be like Ford handing over the keys to the Mustang factories to the Dong Feng Motor Corp. IMG as its stands is only loyal to profitable commodities, which IW is not these days. That's why the USTA will have to step in as the white knight if all else fails: tennis in the United States would take a huge hit if it is sold to the Chinese, who are bidding with monopoly money of sorts anyway."...Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale on his ATP Houston event: "We're going to keep the red clay, and we're going to make them better. We're gonna get them French guys over here, have them drink some wine and get these damn tennis courts the way they ought to be, no doubt about it. That's our tradition. That's what we do."...The ATP announced that Vietnam will stage an ATP-level tournament this year for the first time in history. Ho Chi Minh City was approved by the ATP Board of Directors as host city for Sept. 26-Oct. 2 at the Phu Tho Sport Center, located 20 minutes from the center of the city.
