Safin Ousts Former Champ Ferrero at French Open

It wasn't an upset in terms of numbers, with Australian Open champ and No. 3 seed Marat Safin defeating No. 32 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6(5), 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(2) Saturday at the French Open, but it was an upset in almost every other aspect.

Safin, troubled by a knee injury during the first week at Roland Garros, had lost to Ferrero in their previous meeting just weeks ago at the Masters Series-Hamburg. Throw in the Russian's extended slump since winning at Melbourne, and all the ingredients were there for another defeat until Safin again flicked the unpredictability switch.

"I think at one point, Juan Carlos got a bit nervous," Safin said. "He didn't know how to finish his sets...I think the whole match turned around one or two points. One or two points really made the difference."

Other seeded winners Saturday were (8) Guillermo Coria (d. Melzer in straights), (12) Nikolay Davydenko (d. (21) Haas, baking two bagels in the final two sets), and (15) Tommy Robredo (d. Sanchez in an all-Spanish).

Two un-seeds also worked their way into the fourth round in the Roddick-killing Argentine Jose Acasuso (d. (27) Volandri who retired in the first set with a wrist injury), and Argentine veteran Mariano Puerta (d. Wawrinka after dropping the first set).

Two matches were suspended due to darkness with (9) Guillermo Canas leading Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-3, 7-6(4), 2-2, and (28) Nicolas Kiefer leading Igor Andreev 6-4, 7-6(7), 3-6, 4-4.

On court Sunday on the men's side at Roland Garros are (10) Nalbandian vs. Hanescu, (4) Rafael "The Prodigy" Nadal vs. (23) Sebastien "The Skateboard Kid" Grosjean, (9) Canas vs. Mathieu (to finish), (1) Federer vs. (14) Moya, (5) Gaudio vs. (20) Ferrer, (28) Kiefer vs. Andreev, and in doubles highlights Americans (3) Bryan/Bryan vs. Belgians (13) Xavier "X-Man" Malisse/ Olivier "The Roach" Rochus.

Mauresmo Chokes, Henin Slides By at French Open

French hope Amelie Mauresmo endured another heart-wrenching choke Saturday at the French Open, losing to a player she had beaten three times already this year, 17-year-old Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

Serving at 4-5 in the third, Mauresmo immediately went down 0-40 and capped the occasion with a double fault on match point.

"I had a lot of pressure," Mauresmo said. "She had a lot of power. She put a lot of power into her shots...I think that I'm doing quite well. I'm doing things at my own pace. This defeat, compared to previous defeats, previous defeats have been much more frustrating."

Other seeded winners Saturday were world No. 1 threat (2) Maria Sharapova (d. Chakvetadze), (6) Svetlana Kuznetsova (d. Irvin 6-0 in the third), (7) Nadia Petrova (d. Peer), (10) Justinne Henin-Hardenne (d. Medina Garrigues after dropping the first), (12) Elena Bovina (d. (17) Golovin), and (22) Francesca Schiavone (d. Groenefeld).

"I think she was playing good and I was a little bit surprised by the way she was playing," said Henin-Hardenne, who fell behind 0-5 in the first set against the Spaniard. "I just needed a little bit of time to get used to the rhythm of the match and also to the heat and everything."

In another upset, Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives ousted (13) Nathalie Dechy, while Swiss Emmanuelle Gagliardi came from a set down to defeat Emilie Loit in an all-unseeded.

On court Sunday are (8) Schnyder vs. (21) Pierce, (6) Kuznetsova vs. (10) Henin-Hardenne, (1) Davenport vs. (14) Clijsters, (2) Sharapova vs. Llagostera Vives, Karatantcheva vs. Gagliardi, (4) Dementieva vs. (16) Likhovtseva in an all-Russian, (7) Petrova vs. (12) Bovina in an all-Russian, and (22) Schiavone vs. (29) Ivanovic.

X-CORRECT
Lindsay Davenport was not the only American left in the draw as of Friday at the French Open, with the unseeded Melissa Irvin still bandying about in the women's singles.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Wonder why the Carlos Moya-Roger Federer match is on Suzy Lenglen while David Nalbandian-Victor Hanescu is on Chartier? Probably because tournament officials figure Moya will either not play or retire. Hint hint...How late does the sun stay out in Paris? So late that the Nicolas Kiefer-Igor Andreev match was halted due to light issues around 9:35 p.m...Kim Clijsters has won her last six meetings against Lindsay Davenport...Thus far, Maria Sharapova has only beaten 18-year-olds at the French Open...How pissed must Andy Roddick feel after Jose Acasuso got basically a walkover when Filippo Volandri retired with hand tendonitis down 0-3 in the first set. If Roddick had pulled out any of those last three sets he'd be in the fourth round against Mariano Puerta...ESPN's Brad Gilbert said he would stand on his head if no Americans reached the quarterfinals. When is that happening, or did we miss it?...Six Russian women have reached the fourth round...What happened to Tommy Haas, who lost his final 14 or so games to Nikolay Davydenko? Anyone??...Rain is expected Sunday afternoon in Paris, could be heavy according to the weather intern...Maria Sharapova says the instant replay system should be a go: "I think it can definitely help the game because as you see on the clay courts, when an opponent doesn't agree with the shot, the umpire can just go and check the mark and there you go, there's the proof. So if it's accurate enough and if it is, then that is why we are going to use it; if it's not accurate, there's no reason to use it. But if it's accurate, I don't see a reason why. It's just a person's not going to go into a press conference and say, 'The umpire cheated me on that.' You're not gonna have an excuse anymore. I think that's great because the game deserves to be fair."...American Alex Kuznetsov will be out 3-4 months after a traffic accident...Justine Henin-Hardenne is 23-1 this year...What was with Maria Sharapova watching (again) Juan Carlos Ferrero's match from the stands? Looking for a mosquito bite?...Congrats to NBC in the U.S. for fast forwarding their tape of the Marat Safin-Juan Carlos Ferrero match, jumping to the fourth set when there was a half hour left until they switched to golf -- wonder who was going to win that?
