Davenport, Sharapova Whack Way into Wimbledon SemifinalsThe top three seeds, led by world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport and defending champ Maria Sharapova, advanced into the semifinals Tuesday at Wimbledon with straight-set victories that were anything but routine.
Davenport reached her fifth All-England Club semi with a 7-6(1), 6-3 display of baseline bashing versus current US Open holder and No. 5 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.
"I played a good tiebreak and good second set," said Davenport, prevailing against windy conditions and a serving assault by the Russian. "It seemed like every time I had break point, she aced me."
After four breaks of serve combined in the first set, Davenport dominated the tiebreak then broke early in the second, at the same time breaking the Russian's will in running up a 4-0 lead before closing it out.
In the semis Davenport will face No. 3 seed Amelie Mauresmo, who the American has defeated in their last seven meetings. Mauresmo advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 net-rushing win over No. 9 seed Anastasia Myskina.
"I was very aggressive," Mauresmo said. "I knew I would have more opportunities on her second serve especially. You know, I've really decided to put the pressure on her right from the first game and make her play as many shots as I could -- especially to pass me."
Myskina, who felt she was stronger from the baseline, was not so strong with the passing shots.
"She come a lot to the net," said Myskina who committed 20 unforced errors, her lowest of the tournament. "I think that was good for her because from the baseline, I felt much stronger, and a lot of rallies I won from the baseline. That's the only one thing that she should do is come to the net, and she did really well today."
Sharapova was tested against countrywoman and No. 8 seed Nadia Petrova in a 7-6(6), 6-3 victory, still not dropping a set in the tournament.
Sharapova will now face No. 14 seed Venus Williams in the semifinals after the American survived a late charge from No. 12 seed Mary Pierce 6-0, 7-6(10), with the Frenchwoman failing to capitalize on four sets points.
On tap for Wednesday on the women's side at Wimbledon is doubles-only in Kuznetsova/Mauresmo vs. McShea/Spears (to finish), Douchevina/Peer vs. (8) Groenefeld/M.Navratilova, Aussies (11) Stewart/Stosur vs. (4) Petrova/Shaughnessy, and (7) Hantuchova/Sugiyama vs. (2) Black/Huber.
Bryan Brothers Into Semifinals at Wimbledon
No. 2 Bob and Mike Bryan were the first seeded team into the men's doubles semifinals Tuesday at Wimbledon, defeating unseeded Slovaks Dominik "The Dominator" Hrbaty and Michal Mertinak 7-6(2), 6-4, 7-6(1).
On the Bryan's tail were shaky No. 1 seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Max "The Beast" Mirnyi, albeit a round behind in winning their fourth-round match, coming from 0-2 sets down against No. 13-seeded Austrians Julian Knowle and Jurgen "Tuna" Melzer 6-7(1), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 5 seeds Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic were also fourth-round winners, straight-setting the unseeded Slovak/Czech pair of Karol Beck and Jaroslav Levinsky 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
The surprise unseeded Australian/South African pair of Stephen Huss and Weslie Moodie also moved into the semifinals after shocking No. 3 seeds Mark Knowles and Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.
Germans Rainer Schuettler and Alexander Waske led No. 11-seeded Czechs Cyril Suk and Pavel Vizner 6-4, 6-4, and a break 4-3 in the third when play was suspended due to darkness.
Scheduled for the men Wednesday at Wimbledon are the singles quarterfinals in (3) Hewitt vs. (26) Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez (Hewitt won their only meeting in straight sets at last year's US Open), (2) Roddick vs. (9) Grosjean (A-Rod has won the last six meetings), (1) Federer vs. (21) Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez (Fed leads 4-0), and (12) T.Johansson vs. (18) Nalbandian (first meeting); in doubles it's (5) Paes/Zimonjic vs. Zimbabwe's (4) Black/Ullyett, and Germans Schuettler/Waske vs. Czechs (11) Suk/Vizner (to finish).

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Serena Williams will not appear in the Wimbledon final for the first time since 2001...BBC analyst Tracy Austin on Serena: "I live in Los Angeles and it seems like I see Serena on a red carpet every week. It's tough for Serena because she's a very gregarious person. She likes to go out, but I think she needs to cut that out a little. Maybe this will be a wake-up call. At the moment, she seems to want to get back to the top without putting the effort in. She said she doesn't like practice and only likes competing. You can't get away with that on the tour anymore. Everybody is so fit and so match tough. If she wants to get back, and she can, she will have to put a lot of hard work in."...John McEnroe, wearing the "clamdigger" pants made popular(?) by Rafael Nadal, is playing the senior doubles event at Wimbledon for the first time, teaming with old partner Peter Fleming in the over-45s. The pair opened their campaign Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Brits John Feaver and John Lloyd, with McEnroe announcing he meant business, amidst some good-natured clowning and banter during the encounter, by delivering two aces in his first service game...Venus Williams, almost seeded outside the Top 15, says being among the last four alive at Wimbledon is more indicative of her true ranking: "I'm always playing well, to be quite honest. I lost a lot of points in the claycourt season. I couldn't go to some tournaments to defend points, so I fell out of the Top 10 because of that, too. Then I didn't play that great at the French. This is really my normal ranking."...From CourtCoverage on the changes to the doubles on the ATP: "Here's a thought: how about just playing them not to play? That seems to be the ultimate goal; why not just get on with it? And no-ad scoring is pure sacrilege...It's funny, we keep getting all these silly cosmetic fiddles -- no changeover after the first game, rankings for dummies, cell phone customization...And now this, which is worse than a cosmetic fiddle. An integral form of the sport is being structurally de-legitimized at the professional level. Compare, over the same period of time, how little administrative effort has gone into making changes that aren't about money, aren't about marketing, but just about making Watching Tennis Better? The standard is so pathetic that the introduction of a combined media guide is hailed as a major breakthrough."...The Fifth Annual Andy Roddick Charity Weekend in December will feature Lionel Ritchie. Ouch. Would probably get a bigger crowd with Nicole Ritchie.
