Federer in Quarterfinal Play, Bryan Brothers Into Semifinals at WimbledonPosted on June 29, 2005 No. 2 Bob and Mike Bryan were the first seeded team into the men's doubles semifinals Tuesday at Wimbledon, defeating unseeded Slovaks Dominik "The Dominator" Hrbaty and Michal Mertinak 7-6(2), 6-4, 7-6(1).
On the Bryan's tail were shaky No. 1 seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Max "The Beast" Mirnyi, albeit a round behind in winning their fourth-round match, coming from 0-2 sets down against No. 13-seeded Austrians Julian Knowle and Jurgen "Tuna" Melzer 6-7(1), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. No. 5 seeds Leander Paes and Nenad Zimonjic were also fourth-round winners, straight-setting the unseeded Slovak/Czech pair of Karol Beck and Jaroslav Levinsky 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. The surprise unseeded Australian/South African pair of Stephen Huss and Weslie Moodie also moved into the semifinals after shocking No. 3 seeds Mark Knowles and Michael Llodra 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. Germans Rainer Schuettler and Alexander Waske led No. 11-seeded Czechs Cyril Suk and Pavel Vizner 6-4, 6-4, and a break 4-3 in the third when play was suspended due to darkness. Scheduled for the men Wednesday at Wimbledon are the singles quarterfinals in (3) Hewitt vs. (26) Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez (Hewitt won their only meeting in straight sets at last year's US Open), (2) Roddick vs. (9) Grosjean (A-Rod has won the last six meetings), (1) Federer vs. (21) Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez (Fed leads 4-0), and (12) T.Johansson vs. (18) Nalbandian (first meeting); in doubles it's (5) Paes/Zimonjic vs. Zimbabwe's (4) Black/Ullyett, and Germans Schuettler/Waske vs. Czechs (11) Suk/Vizner (to finish). |
