Do Falls Like a Deer at ATP Vietnam Open

Posted on September 27, 2005

In the only two main draw matches Monday at the ATP stop in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnamese wildcard Mihn Quan Do was felled 6-3, 6-2 by German Bjorn Phau, and Taipei's Yen-Hsun Lu defeating Anthony Dupuis 6-1, 6-4.

"I was a little bit nervous myself, to be playing the first ATP-level match in the history of Vietnam," Do said.

Officials are also happy and a bit nervous to be hosting the first ATP event in the history of Vietnam.

"This tournament will be a booster for Vietnamese players and the development of tennis in Vietnam," said Tournament Director Amit Naor. "By staging this event, this will show Vietnam can host major international events in other sports too."

The event also lost its Top 3 doubles seeds Monday with upset-makers Brzezicki/Monaco (d. Wimbledon champs (1) Huss/Moodie in three), Popp/Vanek (d. (2) Kerr/Parrott), and Germans Burgsmuller/Kohlschreiber (d. (3) Levinsky/Stepanek in three).

On tap for Tuesday are Moodie vs. (8) Kohlschreiber, (WC) Thron vs. (Q) Mamiit, Brzezicki vs. Arthurs, (5) Saulnier vs. Wessels, Tipsarevic vs. (Q) Vico, and (Q) Pless vs. (7) Burgsmuller.
