Sharapova in All-Russian Final at Indian WellsPosted on March 18, 2006 Upon returning to professional tennis after a three-year hiatus, Martina Hingis said she didn't see what was so special about Maria Sharapova.
After losing her second of three 2006 meetings with the Russian Friday at the Pacific Life Open, Hingis found out the Russian's specialty when Sharapova pummeled her into submission from the baseline with a 6-3, 6-3 victory to gain the final. Sharapova said she found inspiration from a fan's taunting during one of the changeovers during the match, with someone seated behind the Russian yelling out "Martina, she's getting tired." "That kind of pumped me up and I hit two winners in a row," Sharapova said. "I looked back at (him) and I'm like, 'I'm tired, my butt.'" In the all-Russian final Sharapova will face Elena Dementieva, who launched an improbably comeback with Justine Henin-Hardenne leading 6-2, 5-2 to win by the scoreline of 2-6, 7-5, 7-5. "I think I was dominating the match," Henin-Hardenne said. "I was up 6-2, 5-2, then I lost my concentration a little bit at that point. That cost me the second set. I really helped her to come back in the match." Dementieva said her early problems during the match brought the wrath of her coach/mother. "When I was 6-2, 5-2 down, I was like, 'Welcome to Miami, I have a flight tomorrow,'" Dementieva said. "Really, I didn't expect myself to win this one. I was having some fun, some lucky shots. I was smiling. My mom, you know, she was angry with me. She said, 'Are you playing semifinals or are you having some fun here?'" The doubles final will be (1) Raymond/Stosur (d. Benesova/Strycova in the semis) against (3) Ruano Pascual/Shaughnessy (d. Daniilidou/Medina Garrigues). |
