Roddick Advances, Blake Dumped in HoustonPosted on April 12, 2006 Blake Loses 4th Consecutive Match at ATP HoustonJames Blake has rocketed into the Top 10 in 2006, but the American is turning out to be a one-trick pony on anything but hardcourts, on Tuesday losing in the first round of the ATP claycourt event at Houston 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-1 to French qualifier Antony Dupuis. "No excuses," Blake told reporters after the loss on the difficulties in transitioning from the grass to clay. "(Roddick) had to make the same adjustment. Antony served very well. These guys are all so good you have to be on top of your game every night." For Blake it was his fourth consecutive loss, coming off two on grasscourts last weekend when the U.S. Davis Cup team defeated Chile. Blake has a struggling 6-9 win-loss record over the last two years on surfaces outside of hardcourts/carpet. American winners Tuesday at the U.S. Claycourt Championships were No. 1 seed Andy Roddick (d. Capdeville), wildcard Mardy Fish (d. (8) Monaco 7-6 in the third), unseeded Vince Spadea (d. Berlocq), and qualifier Scoville Jenkins (d. (Q) Kunitsyn in three). "He's in great shape," Fish told reporters of outlasting Monaco in the third-set breaker. "That's his best weapon, wearing other players down...I played him in the Australian Open last year. Beat him 9-7 in the fifth. It took 4-1/2 hours." Roddick is now 24-2 in Houston over the last six years, winning three titles in five finals. "I felt pretty good coming off of last weekend," Roddick told reporters. "The transition coming off grass last week to clay was pretty evident in this match but I thought if I could get through this one I'd be all right. Other players into the second round were Germans Alexander Waske (d. Vanek 7-6 in the third) and Rainer Schuettler (d. (Q) Muller, bagel in the first), and Spaniard Fernando Vicente (d. Reynolds). Highlights of Wednesday play on the dirt are (5) Haas vs. Waske in an all-German, (1) Bryan/Bryan vs. (WC) T.Blake/Goldstein, (4) Baghdatis vs. (WC) Witten, (1) Roddick vs. Marach, and Horna/Monaco vs (WC) J.Blake/Fish. Gilbert Says Nadal on Coaching Wish List In Beijing recently for a seminar as a Nike spokesperson, ESPN commentator Brad Gilbert, who coached Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to the No. 1 ranking, says Rafael Nadal is on the short list of players he would like to coach. "If possible, I hope to become Rafael Nadal's coach," said Gilbert in an article on VamosRafael.com reported by Wen Shou and translated to English. "It's undeniable that (Roger) Federer is currently the best player and no one can pose a threat to him for the time being but currently the only player who can pose a threat to him in the future is Rafael Nadal." Gilbert said that in addition to his arsenal, Nadal's flair is good for the game. "That strong body, and love for tight tennis pirate pants, a fashion statement," Gilbert said. "Even my wife admires Nadal, she once joked that she likes (him) so much that she wishes she can adopt him and bring him home." It was Gilbert's fourth trip to China, his first occurring in 1992. "I was playing an exhibition match with Michael Chang in Guang Zhou back then, I lost, but it's normal as Guangdong is Michael Chang's hometown," said Gilbert, who also came to China while coaching Agassi. "(Agassi and I) were very surprised, this Chinese city is so charming, Andre said to me that Shanghai is as prosperous as Las Vegas...tall buildings in your face and the huge ipod billboard made me feel as if I'm in New York or Chicago." Gilbert appeared dressed in his "Raider Nation" black, and explained his personal style to the locals. "This is my trademark, black represents my character," Gilbert said. "Tiger Woods wears red, I wear black. Not only clothes, even my shoes, caps and sunglasses are in black. Not wearing a black cap today as Nike gave me a white cap, I said this is not my style, so no cap." Davydenko, Ferrero Dusted at ATP Valencia Top seed Nikolay Davydenko, French Open champ Juan Carlos Ferrero, David Ferrer and defending champ Igor Andreev all made opening-round exits Tuesday as the ATP claycourt stop in Valencia lost four of its Top 5 seeds. Czech Jan Hernych shocked last year's Roland Garros semifinalist Davydenko, while qualifiers ousted the Spaniards Ferrer (l. to Thierry Ascione, retiring with a shoulder injury) and Ferrero (l. to countryman Nicolas Almagro), and wildcard Marat Safin edged his countryman Andreev in two tightly-contested sets. "This was a special day for me, against a great player," said Almagro of beating Ferrero from a set down. "He was No. 1 of the world and crowd favorite." No. 6 Filippo Volandri (d. (Q) Portas 0-and-1) was the lone seeded winner, joined in the second round by un-seeded Italians Potito Starace (d. Dlouhy), Andreas Seppi (d. Ramirez Hidalgo) and David Sanguinetti (d. (LL) Gabashvili from a set down), France's Gilles Simon (d. Vik), Czech Tomas Zib (d. Pavel), and German Bjorn Phau (d. (Q) Fraile in three). On court Wednesday in Valencia are Simon vs. Sanguinetti, Starace vs. (7) Verdasco, Hernych vs. Guillermo "G-Lo" Garcia-Lopez, and (Q) Ascione vs. Seppi. Henin a Winner, Vaidisova Upset at WTA Charleston Former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne beat Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-3 Tuesday to improve her career record to 12-0 at the WTA claycort stop in Charleston. "The first match on clay is never easy, especially a night match to start in the tournament," the 2003 and 2005 winner told reporters. "I play too far from my baseline in my first matches on clay, and I'm not aggressive enough, and you have to fight a lot to win the points, so that's not easy. You get tired very, very easily, very soon in the match because you're just out of the rhythm." Other seeded winners Tuesday were (3) Patty Schnyder (d. (Q) Tu), (7) Dinara Safina (d. Russian countrywoman Zvonareva), (9) Anabel Medina Garrigues (d. Diaz-Oliva in three), (11) Katarina Srebotnik (d. Razzano), and (12) Marion Bartoli (d. Shuai). "I was not very happy with the way I played, but I got through," Schnyder told reporters. "I'm really struggling a bit because normally here I just could place the ball anywhere I wanted and really not miss too many. So I definitely want to get that feeling back." Orchestrating upsets on the day were Colombia's Catalina Castano (d. (5) Vaidisova), and Ukraine qualifier Julia Vakulenko (d. (10) Jankovic). "I was up 5-1 and then nothing happened," Vaidisova told reporters. "I got out of my rhythm and it was definitely frustrating. I just couldn't keep playing well, so it's definitely not a match I will try to remember for a long time." The top-seeded Henin-Hardenne gets a rest Wednesday, while tournament organizers wait and see if Svetlana Kuznetsova can overcome injury to take to the court against American Meghann Shaughnessy. She's gearing up for the inaugural "Billie Awards" with Elton John in California next week, the World Team Tennis season in July and the "Go Girl Go" fitness programs in Atlanta and Chicago. And an HBO Sports documentary on her life, "Billie Jean King: Portrait of a Pioneer," premieres Tuesday night in Manhattan. "At 62 you want to keep moving, that's important," King said in a recent phone interview with The Associated Press. She still plays tennis three times a week despite six operations on her knees. "Go for it, dream big and go for it," she said."...From the Sydney Morning Herald: "Alicia Molik's return to tournament tennis will come six month's earlier than expected, yet oddly enough a week or two later than possible. Molik will make her comeback in Rome next month -- the earliest date available after fulfilling her commitment to the TV series Dancing With The Stars. Just as Collingwood's Brodie Holland discovered last year, celebrity and sporting schedules can sometimes clash, and Molik will delay her first appearance on the European claycourt circuit until the Italian Open on May 15. She might then enter the Istanbul Cup the following week ahead of the French Open on May 29."...From Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle: "Though his mother was a fine tennis player, Texas Longhorns hero Vince Young says he never tried to play the game except casually on occasion as a kid. Nonetheless, as Jim McIngvale's invited guest, Young made a predictably big splash at Westside on Tuesday night, throwing a few passes between the Andy Roddick and James Blake matches. Young threw one of them perfectly to Roddick, who ran a length-of-the-court pattern. "If I'd have dropped that one, I would have been a total dork," Roddick said. He, in turn, blasted a serve past Young, just to show him his stuff. Having become an Austin resident when he's not globe-trotting on the ATP Tour, Roddick is gradually being transformed into a Longhorns fan after rooting for Nebraska (where he was born) since childhood. Roddick's grab, by the way, meant $10,000 to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Texas ex McIngvale, who owns the tennis club and Gallery Furniture, convinced Young to fling the football around for a good cause. For every "completion," Mattress Mack told Young he'd donate 10 grand to the cancer center. McIngvale ended up being on the hook for $40,000."...Spaniard Al Costa has lost seven matches in a row...From ContactMusic.com: "Tennis ace Andre Agassi has been praised as the perfect man by his wife Steffi Graf -- despite her initial reluctance to date him. Graf reveals it took Agassi months of perseverance before he secured her attentions, because he refused to ask her out personally. Instead, the former husband of actress Brooke Shields, was so shy he sent Graf love messages through his friends. She says, "That was the wrong way. If you have something to tell me, the only way is to do it directly." However, after being happily married for four-and-a-half years Graf is convinced she has found her Mr Right. She adds, "You just have to look in his eyes. He is unbelievably cordial. He's just perfect."...From Tennis Week: "A foot injury has prevented Mary Pierce from playing Charleston this week, but she'll still emerge as a winner at the clay-court event. Pierce will receive the first annual Meredith Inspiration Award during this week's Family Circle Cup. The award, sponsored by Meredith Corporation, the publisher of Family Circle magazine, recognizes the woman professional athlete who by her actions has inspired women worldwide to achieve their personal and professional goals. Off the court, Pierce has been an active supporter and charitable volunteer. She has been very involved in the WTA Tour's charity initiatives and serves as Whirlpool Ambassador for Habitat for Humanity. Her contributions also include work with Tennis for Africa, a non profit organization dedicated to providing support to the poorest populations in Africa, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which is fighting the battle against AIDS worldwide."...Ashley "Pebbles" Harkleroad speaking with the Charleston Post & Courier on husband Alex Bogomolov, Jr.: "He's in Mexico right now, chasing points. He'll be gone for three weeks, and that kid can go for five weeks at a time, no problem. He's all by himself, too. I need someone with me at all times. I get lonely, you know. I enjoy tennis, it's the lifestyle I'm not a big fan of. I have to find a way to get through it. If I find a way to get that done, I feel like I can play better tennis. It's a lot of ups and downs out here, and I like to be on an even keel. You are not going to get that with this lifestyle, so it's something I'm constantly struggling to improve with myself, dealing with the ups and downs."...Thomas Muster speaking with the BBC: "I changed my racquet in 1997 to a slightly longer one with a different stringing pattern. It helped me to serve better, volley better and to hit more 'flat'. That is shown in my record on hard courts that year because they were the best of my career, but I couldn't play as well with that racquet on clay. It didn't spin the ball as well. I played really well at Key Biscayne, but then when I went to Davis Cup, Goran Ivanisevic beat me on clay and that was really unexpected because I was in really good shape. I couldn't spin the ball the way I used to and I didn't have a good clay court season. I tried all sorts of other racquets and string patterns, even using my old racquet for clay and my new racquet for hard courts, but nothing worked. I couldn't make the transition between the two quick enough. Once you lose confidence and you are testing racquets in the middle of the season it's like a Formula One driver trying to work out troubles with the engine."...Mary Pierce and Tatiana Golovin will miss the French Fed Cup tie with injury...The draw has been made for the September Davis Cup World Group Playoff ties: Mexico at Austria, Thailand at Germany, Czech Republic at Netherlands, Korea at Romania, Belgium at Slovak Republic, Italy at Spain, Sweden at Brazil, and Serbia & Montenegro at Switzerland, with the winners gaining entry into the 2007 World Group and the losers banished to zonal play. |
