Costa v Ferrero Today at ATP BarcelonaFormer Roland Garros champ Albert Costa showed he is not ready to go quietly into the night in his final ATP event, and Croatian giant "Dr." Ivo Karlovic put on a serving clinic to take out a former Roland Garros semifinalist Wednesday at the ATP stop in Barcelona.
The wildcard entrant Costa moved into the third round with a straight-set defeat of No. 8 seed Dominik "The Dominator" Hrbaty, making due on the gimpy knee that will end his career at the conclusion of the event.
Karlovic shocked Russian No. 2 seed Nikolay Davydenko 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-4, throwing down 19 aces to move into the third round.
Other seeded winners Wednesday were (1) Rafael Nadal (d. countryman F.Lopez), (4) Radek Stepanek (d. Volandri from a set down), (6) Tommy Robredo (d. Starace, bagel in the second), (7) Jarkko Nieminen (d. Kohlschreiber), (10) Juan Carlos Ferrero (d. countryman A.Martin), and (12) Fernando Verdasco (d. Calleri).
"I didn't play a great match, but once I pass the first two rounds, things get easier," Nadal told reporters after his 43rd consecutive claycourt win. "I'm used to the court and the conditions."
32-year-old Spaniard Albert "The Dropshot Dragon" Portas also provided an upset Wednesday, mixing up play sufficiently to distract No. 9 seed Tomas Berdych for a straight-set win.
Another unseeded winner was hot-handed Russian qualifier Evgeny Korolev, who following up his win over Carlos Moya earlier in the week with a 6-3, 6-0 pasting of Spaniard Fernando Vicente.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
From Darren Rovell's blog on ESPN.com: "A couple of years ago, I wrote a story about the practice of tennis players painting their rackets to look like current models, even though they were using old ones. I thought the practice was a bit shady given that some of the companies were telling consumers that players were playing with one racket model, but were really playing with another. Yesterday, the Sports Business Journal reported that James Blake, despite signing with Prince in December, was still using his old Dunlop racket, with a Prince logo on the knob. So what ethics are involved here?...Blake is ranked eighth in the world, and with Andy Roddick's slide is the most marketable American tennis player, but I think it's the right thing to do. Lastly, while Blake knows what he is doing, I don't believe he is deliberately trying to deceit consumers. Out of all the athletes I've dealt with, Blake is one of the most keen, savvy and real professionals in any game."...Lleyton Hewitt's court case against the ATP will begin next February in Adelaide, from years ago when Hewitt was fined for reportedly refusing to fulfill a media commitment in Cincinnati...Congrats to tennis writer Joel Drucker who will be debuting a weekly column on CBS Sportsline beginning in May...From Tennisnews.com: "Maria Sharapova, in Los Angeles practicing on clay for two tennis exhibitions in Mexico on April 28 and 29, injured her right foot Monday and has been told she cannot play tennis for five to seven more days. "An MRI showed that Maria has inflammation in her right metatarsal joint with associated soft tissue swelling of the posterior tibialis insertion. She will recover fully, but cannot play tennis for the next few days," according to Dr. Mark Lindsay, the soft tissue specialist who examined her after the injury this week. He expects her to be able to begin practicing by next week, and she plans to compete at the Italian Open in Rome the week of May 15." -- You docs need to get Maria back on her feet so she can play more exos...Terra Deportes is reporting that "Julio &" Galo Blanco has announced his retirement at Barcelona, joining Al Costa...The 2006 Fed Cup World Group qualifying round match-ups will be Austria at Japan, Czech Republic at France, Germany at China, and Russia at Croatia.
