Vaidisova Stops Peng for Strasbourg TitlePosted on May 28, 2006 Czech teen Nicole Vaidisova won her first title of the year Saturday, defeating China's unseeded Peng Shuai 7-6(7), 6-3 at the WTA stop in Strasbourg.
It was the sixth career title for the No. 2-seeded Vaidisova, and the first career final for Peng. "I had to cut down on my errors to get back on track," said Vaidisova, who trailed 0-3 in the first set. "She had a couple of chances in the tiebreak to take the set but I was luckier. We were both nervous. I was up 3-0 in the second set and I let that get away from me, but managed to pull it out in the end." The teen also won a Mazda MX-5 sports car along with the prize check. "I'm really happy to win the car but I don't start driving lessons for another couple of months," Vaidisova said. For Peng the final was an achievement after two weeks ago winning back-to-back matches for the first time all year. "I reached my first final and that is a good thing," Peng said. "Now I will forget about this loss and concentrate on the Grand Slams. I start in Paris on Monday, so I have to just rest and start to focus on that. I had a good week here." In the doubles final top seeds Liezel Huber and Martina Navratilova beat No. 3 seeds Martina Muller and Andreea Vanc 6-2, 7-6(1) for their first title of the year as a team. |
