Kim Clijsters will miss the US Open because of a left wrist injury, the same injury that kept her out much of 2004 after surgery, with the Belgian now unable to defend her title from last year.
Clijsters' website said an MRI and X-ray showed the problem is worse than originally thought, and she will likely be out two months, missing the September Fed Cup final.
"In the second round of the Montreal tournament, Kim has had to withdraw from her match against
Stephanie Dubois over a wrist injury," said Clijsters' website. "At 2-1 in the second set, the world's number two asked to have her wrist taped. Clearly hindered by this, she didn't use any double-handed backhands anymore and tried to finish each rally as soon as possible. A bit later on in the game, she fell anew on her wrist and was forced to withdraw."
