Bjorkman/Beast v Damm/Paes in US Open Final

Posted on September 9, 2006

Second seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi advanced to their second consecutive US Open final by posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ashley Fisher and Tripp Phillips Friday. The No.2 tandem in the Stanford ATP Rankings broke Fisher and Phillips in three of nine opportunities while never being broken in the one-hour, 14-minute match.

Bjorkman and Mirnyi are looking to claim their fifth title in the season as a duo. In 2006 they captured the Roland Garros crown in defeating World No.1s Bob and Mike Bryan in the final. They also took home the ATP Masters Series shields in Cincinnati, Miami and Monte Carlo.

Bjorkman and Mirnyi, who are 4-0 in finals this year, improved their overall record to 44-8 in the season (24-4 on hard courts).

For the title the Bjorkman and Mirnyi will take on No. 6 seeds Martin Damm and Leander Paes, who came back from a one break of serve deficit in the third set to defeat No.4 seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett 6-7(1), 7-6(9), 7-5 in two hours and 40 minutes.

The duo Damm-Paes is in the final of a Grand Slam event for the second time this season. At this year's Australian Open final event they advanced to the final before losing to Bob and Mike Bryan.

Paes, a former World No.1 player in doubles, has two Grand Slam titles under his belt (Roland Garros 2001 and Wimbledon 2000 w/ Bhupathi), while Damm is chasing his first major crown.

The duo's lone title in 2006 came in 's-Hertogenbosch. They also reached the semifinals at Wimbledon, ATP Masters Series Canada and Cincinnati and Dubai.
