Gonzalez Upsets Roddick at ATP Vienna

Top seed and defending champion Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia will meet the slugging Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in the final at Vienna on Sunday.

Ljubicic had little trouble defeating Dominik Hrbaty 6-1, 6-4 on Saturday, while Gonzalez upset third-seeded Andy Roddick 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) in semifinal play.

"I am not surprised that I beat Andy, because I played well all week," Gonzalez told the AP afterward. "The match was very much in balance, we each had just one break of serve. I returned very well, which was the key factor."

Gonzo had won just two of eight prior matches against Roddick, who remains winless (0-4) on the year against Top 10 players.

Ljubicic broke Hrbaty three times in the first set and gave up only three points on his own serve. The second set was on serve until Hrbaty double-faulted twice while trailing 5-4 and Ljubicic converted his second match point.

Ljubicic and Gonzalez are knotted at 3-3 in prior matches, with the Chilean taking two of their three contests this year. The Croat beat Gonzalez right here a year ago in the quarterfinals. Ljubicic, 27, is playing in his fifth final of the year and his second in two weeks. He has won 13 of his last 17 matches. Just 14 days ago in Bangkok, he ended as runner-up to Blake. That was Ljubicic's first final since April.

He also took his two titles this year at Chennai in January (d. Moya) and at Zagreb in February (d. Koubek). He has five career crowns in the 14 finals he has played so far. He won the trophy here in his debut last year (d. Ferrero).
