Davenport Ends Pregnancy Comeback Tour with WTA Quebec Title

Posted on November 4, 2007

Former No. 1 Lindsay Davenport won her second title in three tournaments since returning from the birth of her first child this fall, in the Sunday WTA Quebec City final breezing past No. 3 seed Julia Vakulenko 6-4, 6-1.

"My game plan was to serve well and just hold serve," said Davenport, who in the second set won one game with four aces. "Once I was able to break her at the end of the first set, that helped my momentum. I was focused on my serving and knew the rest of it would take care of itself."

Vakulenko was appearing in her first WTA Tour final.

"Definitely she served well," Vakulenko said. "It was just a really nice week, a really nice tournament. Some matches were easy and some were difficult, and I was just happy I could do my best and make it as far as I did."

Davenport left the tour at the end of last season to give birth to son Jagger Jonathan Leach, who she had in tow with her in Quebec City, and returned to play in September, winning the title in her first tournament back at Bali, Indonesia.

"It can be a success even if you don't win a tournament, and just the journey back has been greater than I could have anticipated," Davenport said. "It has been a much different experience coming back this time around -- I just feel a lot less pressure, and I'm just trying to enjoy it as I go. I haven't set any goals. It's kind of undefined. Obviously things will change in Melbourne [2008 Australian Open] when I'm playing Justine [Henin], Venus or Serena [Williams]; but I consider it a victory just going out and playing a big match, after such a great year off the court."
