Roddick Smashes Racquet, Davydenko in Masters Cup Win

Posted on November 12, 2007

Not unlike legendary fellow American and former No. 1 John McEnroe, Andy Roddick showed that a little racquet-smashing tantrum isn't always a bad thing as the U.S. Davis Cup stalwart regained his composition for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Russian Nikolay Davydenko on Monday in his opening match at the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Roddick led by a set and a break in the second before he came unfurled, taking his aggression out on his Babolat.

"Smashing racquets has hurt me as well as helped me. It's just part of my personality," Roddick said. "I've always been pretty expressive and emotional on the court. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not so much."

It was the first ATP match in two months for Roddick who has been battling a foot problem. The win bodes well for a potential meeting between the American and Davydenko when the U.S. faces Russia in the Davis Cup final at the end of the month.

"I don't know how much relevance tonight's match is going to have three weeks from now or two weeks from now, whenever the final is," Roddick said. "But winning here tonight can't do anything to hurt my chances in the Davis Cup final."

After splintering the racquet, Roddick threw it to fans in the crowd.

"I couldn't use it any more," Roddick said. "I didn't have much use for it, so...better in their hands than a trash can somewhere, right."

Davydenko has admitted he feels under pressure as a result of the investigation into his involvement in match-fixing in regard to a match he lost earlier this year at the ATP event in Poland.

"Maybe I was a bit nervous and not playing so great in the first set," Davydenko said. "In the second set we had new balls and I broke him and surprised myself by playing with only one racket the entire match -- I never do that. But he put up a fight and beat me in the third."
