Spanish qualifier Nuria Llagostera Vives capped a dream week on Sunday with a decisive 6-0, 6-4 win over Maria Emilia Saleri for the Copa Colsanitas title in Bogota, Colombia.
The decisiveness of the victory extended only to the first set, as Llagostera Vives promptly went down 2-4 in the second before stringing together four straight games to clinch the championship.
"I wanted to be aggressive for the entire match and not give my opponent a chance, not let her breathe," Llagostera Vives said.
Ranked outside the Top 100, Llagostera Vives won three matches in the qualifying which she attributed to helping her acclimate to the high altitude.
For Salerni, the 2000 junior world champion, it was her first WTA Tour final.
"I had some really great moments in the juniors; everyone always mentions that," Salerni said. "But it's tough to transition to the tour in South America. We don't have as many tournaments as in North America and Europe, so maybe we need more time to grow as players. Also I had bad injuries for four years in a row and last year was really the first time I could play the whole season."
