Sampras Loses Seniors Boston Match to McEnroe Posted on May 3, 2008
Pete Sampras lost to the almost-50 year old John McEnroe on Friday at the senior tour stop in Boston.
McEnroe topped an earlier win over Jim Courier with the 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 victory over another former No. 1 in Sampas.
It was Sampras' first loss on the Outback Champions Tour in two years.
"Pete gets you unnerved with your rhythm," McEnroe said. "I played great yesterday and today I felt I was hanging on for dear life." Sampras praised McEnroe's performance. "All the credit to John," Sampras said. "He really played great and hung in the second set. He hit some great shots and his serve was very tough to return." In other matches, Aaron Krickstein had a 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 win over Wayne Ferreira, Mikael Pernfors defeated MaliVai Washington 6-3, 6-1, and Jim Courier won when Jimmy Arias withdrew from the event due to a hamstring injury.
"When it gets to the tiebreaker, it's anyone's game and I had some momentum heading into it," said Krickstein, who fought off Ferreira serving for the match. "Moving forward, I am going to need to serve well on a more consistent basis." Scheduled for Saturday are Washington vs. Ferreira, McEnroe vs. Arias (walkover), Pernfors vs. Krickstein, and Sampras vs. Courier.
