In a battle of the Woz's, No. 2-seeded
Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark beat Canadian
Aleksandra Wozniak 6-1, 6-2 Sunday to win the MPS Group Championships title in
Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
"My plan was to play aggressive and make her run," Wozniacki said of her thickly-built opponent. "This is a great start to the claycourt season, a really good start. I proved I can beat these better players."
Wozniak upset top-seeded
Nadia Petrova in the semifinals, but was no match for the variety and scrambling of the Dane. It was the fourth career title for Wozniacki, and her first of 2009.
"The speed is one of my plusses," said Wozniacki, who played with a bandaged leg.
Wozniak's lone WTA title came last year at
Stanford on hardcourt.
"I came up short," Wozniak said. "I missed key shots and she took advantage of all my mistakes. You get so close and then lose, it is sad."
