An interview with:

STANISLAS WAWRINKA

(Translated from French.)

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You said before it was difficult to start the clay court season. How do you feel this year?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I feel better this year. It's never easy for me to change surfaces. I don't feel comfortable. This was my first match and I'm very satisfied with it. I thought I played at a good level.
But the next match will be difficult. However, this match was encouraging.

Q. What do you think of Federer's marriage?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I'm happy for him.

Q. Were you surprised?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I'm happy for him. He got married. They're having a baby.

Q. How did you hear about it?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: In the newspapers.

Q. So you were not in on the secret?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: No, I was not in the loop.

Q. If you play Andreev, would it be an advantage, having beaten him this year?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: It's going to be a new match, so you have to forget about the first match. But still I believe it's going to be a slight advantage.
When we played in Miami, it was a completely new situation; we didn't know each other. But since I played him and beat him, it might be a slight advantage for me. But this doesn't mean I'm going to win.

Q. You said before you liked playing on clay, but you also say it's difficult for you to play here. Isn't that a paradox?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: It's always tough for me to switch surfaces and start playing on clay. Last year I played Davis Cup in Minsk on a fast surface before coming here, so it was even more difficult. This year I had a good preparation. I arrived on Tuesday and had a bit of time. I'm satisfied.

Q. Are you looking forward to the clay season?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Of course. I announced my goals at the beginning of the year and now I have to play well for the rest of the year if I want to meet them. I need to win points, and I have to win them somewhere, so it has to be on clay.
I'm satisfied with my game physically and tennis wise for the past few months. We'll see.

Q. If you win the next round, you might play against your friend (Federer).
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: It's a lot of 'ifs'.

Q. But do you believe Roger is concentrating on tennis right now?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: I don't know. But this is not a question I'm asking myself. Everybody was surprised that he was getting married and coming straight here after that. But personally I'm trying to stay concentrated on my own tennis, on the clay. I want to be focused for my next match.
