REVIEW/PREVIEW
Things went pretty much according to schedule
Sunday at the Open, with only one minor upset
in (22)El Aynaoui edging (10)Novak in a fifth-set
tiebreak. Rolling on were seeds (1)Agassi (d.
(28)Kafelnikov), (2)Federer (d. Blake), (4)Roddick
(d. Saretta), (7)Moya (d. Massu in four), (8)Schuettler
(d. A.Martin), (12)Schalken (d. "Dr."
Ivo Karlovic in three tiebreaks), and (13)Nalbandian
(d. (20)Philippoussis in four). "He always
sticks to the same game plan that he had since
he was, I don't know, 20 years old," said
Y-Man on getting rolled by Agassi. "He's
trying to overpower the opponent from the baseline.
The only difference I can see that he's got physically
stronger, which is complete absurd. Normally,
if you are getting older, you are becoming physically
weaker. With him, it's opposite." In the
only unseeded match, Xavier Malisse beat Dmitry
Tursunov to set up a meeting with Andy Roddick.
Club Fed will next meet his nemesis in Nalbandian.
On tap today in 4th round singles match-ups are (1)Agassi vs. Dent (The Boss leads the head-to-head 2-0), (3)Ferrero vs. T.Martin (JC leads 1-0, last year at the TMS-Miami), (6)Hewitt vs. (11)Srichaphan (Hewitt leads 4-1), and (5)Coria vs. Bjorkman (first meeting).
WTA REVIEW/PREVIEW
Only four matches were on tap Sunday with (naturally)
no surprises in (1)Clijsters (d. (17)Shaugnessy),
(3)Davenport (d. (19)Petrova), (5)Mauresmo (d.
Tanasugarn), and (24)Suarez (d. Likhovtseva) advancing
into the quarterfinals. Davenport was visibly
hobbled in her three-set win, feeling the effect
of her bad toe. "Gosh, it was tough,"
Davenport said. "I started off playing the
first set so well, exactly how I wanted to play.
As the match wore on, I got less aggressive. I'm
just happy to pull it out. I should have probably
won it in the second set."
On court today are (6)Capriati vs. (11)Dementieva (FatCap leads 2-0), (2)Henin-Hardenne vs. Dinara "Little Sis" Safina (first meeting), (15)Sugiyama vs. (29)Schiavone (Schiavone leads 1-0), and (7)Myskina vs. Pierce (Russian leads 2-1).
US OPEN ALL-TIME BOTTOM 10
MEN
Magnus Gustafsson, a 14-time career title winner,
but not so good on hardcourts, ties with Frenchman

while the rogues gallery contains a number of
coaches in Drewett, Carbonell, Saviano, Seguso,

NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES, AND
BARBS
Ha, the ATP sets up a press conference for Ivan
Ljubicic after his rain-delayed doubles so
he can assure the press that "Everyone doesn't
hate Andy Roddick," telling everyone that
A-Rod called him twice the previous night and
they are "cool": "I just wanted
to say that I didn't like his attitude on the
court, not just last night, generally looking,
because I don't have to like it, like you know...Of
course, we are okay. It's not like I'm going to
punch him as soon as I see him."...Scratch

with the rain delay, The Boss will likely end
up playing three straight days of singles...Tuesday

Stop trying so hard...Taylor Dent's conditioning
shone through in his five-set win over Fernando
Gonzalez: "Physical-wise, I felt like, you
know, I could have gone another few sets. But,
you know, he was running my butt all around the
court. It was a good confidence booster for me
physically."...Hey CBS, stop dropping
the ball on the score graphics, keep the tiebreak
score up on the screen, not just between points...Much
to the delight of network execs, Anna Kournikova
has quit her job at a roving reporter for USA
Network, saying she didn't like quizzing fellow
players, and was eating too much while roaming
around the US Open grounds (no joke). If that's
the case, she should drag Daniela Hantuchova along
with her...How about the end of that Novak-El
Aynaoui five-setter, that was like a Czech
Republic vs. Morocco Davis Cup match in Flushing
Meadows (too bad Pam Shriver was talking during
it)...Most popular question asked by other players
to Bohdan Ulihrach, who was falsely suspended
by the ATP for drug use, and settled out-of-court:
"Are you a millionaire?" Actually, Bohdan
went with the Tour's first offer of a free copy
of Deuce Magazine and a hot dog ...The past-her-prime
Amanda Coetzer says she has no retirement

in January, while at the same time talking to
Prince, adidas, and IMG about possible contracts

of a previous super-powered racquet fest in Roddick-Ljubicic,
