World Group Semifinals:
Switzerland at Australia
(Australia wins 3-2)
Lleyton Hewitt clinched the semifinal for Australia
Sunday in perhaps the greatest comeback in Australian
D-Cup history, rallying from two sets and break
down to beat Roger Federer 5-7, 2-6, 7-6, 7-5,
6-1 to put the Aussies into the Cup final. "This
beats the hell out of winning Wimbledon and the
US Open," Hewitt said. In the fifth match
"dead rubber," Michel Kratochvil beat
Todd Woodbridge.

Argentina at Spain (Spain
wins 3-2)
Current No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero dropped the
ball Sunday, but former No. 1 Carlos Moya was
there to pick up the pieces. With Spain leading
2-1 in the tie entering Sunday, Ferrero failed
to clinch the win, falling in straight sets to
an inspired Agustin Calleri. But the veteran Moya
showed everyone what time it is with a 6-1, 6-4,
6-2 brutalization of Gaston Gaudio to put Spain
in the Davis Cup final against Australia. The
Argentine team missing Guillermo Coria and David
Nalbandian struggles in the end, with Gaudio failing
to win a set in two matches.

World Group Qualifying:
Belgium at Austria (Austria
wins 3-2)
Austria clinches the tie in the first of the Sunday
singles over the Xavier Malisse-less Belgium team,
with Stefan Koubek outlasting Ollie Rochus 6-3
in the fifth. Malisse's last-minute injury pull
from the tie dooms Belgium to zonal play for 2004.

Brazil at Canada (Canada
wins 3-2)
Oh Canada! The Canucks took a chance with 19-year-old
Frank Dancevic in the fifth and deciding singles
match against Brazil's Flavio "Of Yesterday"
Saretta Sunday, and it paid off as Canada advanced
into the World Group for the first time in 11
years. "I went out there and played my best.
I just ripped everything," Dancevic said.
"Things just went my way. I hit every ball.
I had nothing to lose. I had a lot on my back,
my country and everything, but I knew I was going
to go out there and win today." The decider
was set up Sunday after Canada's Simon Larose
fell to Gustavo Kuerten in four sets, with the
No. 207-ranked Dancevic then becoming the toast
of the frozen North with the four-set win. Both
of Canada's singles players on Sunday were replacements.
The loss ends an 11-year run for Brazil in the
World Group and could send Kuerten into early
retirement thoughts.

(Czechs win 4-1)
The weight of all Asia on his shoulders finally
proved too much for Paradorn Srichaphan, who went
down meekly in the first singles Sunday to Jiri
Novak to give the Czechs the tie. Thailand has
yet to make their debut in the World Group.

Belarus at Germany (Belarus
wins 3-2)
Max "The Beast" Mirnyi architects the
upset almost single-handedly with a singles win
Friday, the doubles win Saturday, and on Sunday
overwhelming Rainer Schuettler on the slow red
clay. It is the first-ever World Group berth for
Belarus in their third World Group qualifying
round. It is also the first time in 20 years that
Germany is relegated to zonal competition as the
once-proud tennis nation faces facts. "I
want to call all the players together and expect
an explanation from every one of them," said
angry German D-Cup captain Patrik Kuhnen.

Great Britain at Morocco
(Morocco wins 3-2)
Hicham Arazi set off copious amounts of partying
Monday in Morocco after defeating Greg Rusedski
5-7, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6 in a match postponed on Sunday
due to darkness. Rusedski went up an early break
in the fifth set, but blew that along with numerous
break point opportunities (four in one game) against
the Moroccan. The fifth and deciding match came
about after Tim Henman kept the Brit hopes alive
Sunday with an inspired 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-4
win over Moroccan No. 1 Younes El Aynaoui. The
Brits were last ejected from the World Group in
2000 when they lost in the qualifying round at
home on grass to Ecuador.

India at Netherlands
(Netherlands wins 5-0)
The Dutch clinched the tie on Saturday in the
doubles, and on Sunday completed the whitewash
with two more singles wins over the Leander Paes-less
Indian squad. India has not gotten a sniff of
the World Group since being ejected in 1998.

Romania at Ecuador (tied
2-2)
The drama goes on and on. Romania had the chance
to put the tie away Sunday, but Victor Hanescu
was eventually beat down in five sets by Nico
Lapentti. Little brother Giovanni was left to
dig it out for Ecuador, but when darkness called
the match, Romania's Razvan Sabau led two sets
to one. To be continued Monday...

U.S. at Slovak Republic
(U.S. wins 3-2)
Andy Roddick rebounded from his Friday singles
loss to clinch the tie Sunday, beating Slovakia's
Karol Beck to put the U.S. back in the Davis Cup
World Group. "I wanted to come out there
with a lot of energy," Roddick said. "I
tried to play that first match like I played all
summer -- calm, cool and collected. But I think
Davis Cup is a totally different scenario. If
you're feeling it, you've got to be jazzed."
Beck replaced Karol Kucera, who cited a hamstring
injury.

Monday at the three ATP events (see tournament previews): in Shanghai, the lone main draw match on the schedule is the Chinese wildcard Zhu vs. No. 7 seed and former No. 2-ranked Magnus Norman. Today in Bangkok features Popp vs. Eschauer, (Q)Chiudinelli vs. Ancic, and Saulnier vs. (6)Ljubicic. On court in Palermo are Pavel vs. (8)Horna, Squillari vs. (WC)Di Mauro, and Montanes vs. (7)Ramirez Hidalgo in an all-Spanish match-up.
WTA REVIEW/PREVIEW
Sunday's Shanghai final was a repeat of
a week earlier in Bali, with top-seeded Elena
Dementieva of Russia again defeating No. 2 seed
Chanda Rubin 6-3, 7-6(6). "I felt I played
a lot better than I did last week against Elena,"
said Rubin, who is now 7-11 in career finals.
"I was trying different tactics, to be more
aggressive, especially on the returns. It was
only at the crucial moments at the end of the
second set that I seemed to lose concentration,
if only for a moment. Unfortunately at this level
of tennis that can be enough to lose a match.
Of course, I'm happy with the past two weeks,
reaching the finals at both tournaments. On the
other hand, I would have liked to have played
better in both finals, to have kept up the pressure
at all times." In the doubles final, Bali
runners-up Loit/Pratt beat unseeded Sugiyama/Tanasugarn
6-3, 6-3 for their first title as a team.
On court today in Leipzig (see tournament preview) are Vento-Kabchi vs. Husarova, Kleinova vs. Rittner, Likhovtseva vs. Schnyder, Kuznetsova vs. Hantuchova, Farina-Elia vs. Daniilidou, Pisnik vs. Callens, Bartoli vs. Kostanic, and Serna vs. Chladkova.
NOTES, QUOTES, AND BARBS
Australia will likely put Spain on grass
for the Davis Cup final: "We'll get together
as a team and see what the boys think," said
Aussie captain John Fitzgerald. "I've got
a fair idea that they might choose grass. I think
grass probably would be (Spain's) least favorite
surface. So there's a chance, it's our prerogative."...The
Davis Cup World Group draw for 2004 will
be held on Thursday...Andy Roddick has
committed himself to Davis Cup for 2004: "If
I feel I'm playing too much tennis, I'll cut back
on some of the smaller tournaments before the
Davis Cup (weekends). I'll definitely be playing
(in the Cup) next year."...The last U.S
Davis Cup title came in 1995 when Pete Sampras
(mainly), Jim Courier and Todd Martin led the
team to a 3-2 defeat of Russia...The ATP sent
Andy Roddick a message Monday, fining the
No. 2 player $40,000 for pulling out of the Thailand
Open at the last minute. While Roddick says he
injured his hamstring in Davis Cup play Sunday
(yeah right), Thai Open organizers became suspicious
and alerted the ATP when they could obtain no
details of flight plans for Roddick prior to Sunday.
The A-Rod camp alerted the tournament by fax on
Monday morning -- nice one Andy, the student has
become the teacher after watching the pull-o-ramas
from mentors Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi over
the last couple years...Roddick's withdrawal
also means he loses a shot at earning the No.
1 ranking, which he could have grabbed from Ferrero
depending on how results went in Bangkok...Michael
Chang's post-tennis career has begun as he
joined a group of Chinese-Americans in throwing
out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium last Wednesday
night.
