NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
ATP Monte Carlo Tournament Director Patrick Dominguez threw down last week on Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi, saying the two Americans avoid the event simply because they know they can't win it: "Last year, the only reason why Mr. Roddick and Mr. Agassi -- which I respect them for what they have achieved -- are not coming here, it's simply because they don't think they can win the tournament. When Mr. Roddick has Mr. (Tarik) Benhabiles as a coach, he was coming. With Mr. Brad Gilbert, who never won a match on clay, he is not coming. It has to be said one time. And the day he will think he can win Roland Garros, he will play here. Because to win Paris, you've got to play here. Because the closest tournament, clay-wise, on the surface to Paris is here. You can win Rome, you can win Hamburg, but that's always been here where you build the victory in Paris in six weeks. You can watch the stats, and everywhere -- we know that. But Roddick doesn't think -- Brad Gilbert doesn't think he can win Paris (French Open), and I think he's right."...Boris Becker will play an exhibition at Queen's against Henri Leconte...2002 Roland Garros champ Al Costa has lost three in a row on the dirt this season...Today in Barcelona watch Jan-Mike Gambill, who has lost his last seven ATP matches on clay dating to May 2002...Fed Cup nations qualifying for the July 10-11 World Group Playoffs who will get a shot at the World Group: Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Estonia and Belarus...There is dancing in the streets on the Rainer Schuettler website...What a crazy field at the Aix-En-Provence (France) Challenger this week, including Arnaud Clement, Hicham Arazi, Thomas Enqvist, Fabrice Santoro, Nicolas Escude, Richard Gasquet, Franco Squillari, Julien Benneteau, Marc Rosset, Michael Llodra, and Harel Levy among others...Why is WTA CEO Larry Scott failing to push Wimbledon and the French Open for equal prize money?
