Top-Seeded Moya Beaten by Teen Qualifier at ATP BeijingPosted on September 16, 2004 Top-seeded Carlos Moya was ousted by French qualifier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-3, in the first round at Beijing Wednesday, with unforced errors and eight double faults contributing to the world No. 4 Spaniard's downfall. The 19-year-old Tsonga is a former US Open junior champ, and was playing in his first career ATP-level match. "My serve and my forehand are my best weapons and they did not work today," said Moya, who watched three successive aces delivered from the teen to begin the match. "When those two weapons fall apart, I can lose to most players." The other three seeds in action cruised in (2) Juan Carlos Ferrero (d. Gimelstob), (6) Paradorn "The Thai Fighter" Srichaphan (d. Lisnard), and (8) Dominik "The Dominator" Hrbaty (d. (WC) Wang Jr.). Ferrero says he is feeling pretty good despite his horrendous illness and injury-prone year. "There was a lot of frustration this year," said Ferrero, currently residing outside the Top 10. "There was always one more problem, then another problem. It was impossible to play normal tennis. Now I feel 85 to 90 percent physically. I feel comfortable and I feel strong." Three matches went unfinished or un-started due to the rain, with (3) David Nalbandian leading Kristian Pless 7-6(5), and (5) Marat "The Tank" Safin vs. Alex Bogomolov Jr., and (LL) Prakash Amritraj vs. (WC) H. Lu. Other players into the second round were Russian Mikhail Youzhny (d. Ivo "I Used to Date Hingis" Heuberger), American Kevin Kim (d. Burgsmuller), Korea's Hyung-Taik Lee (d. Weiner), and Italy's David Sanguinetti (d. (Q) Healy in three). On court Thursday are (5) Safin vs. Bogomolov Jr., (WC) Lu vs. (LL) Amritraj, (3) Nalbandian vs. Pless (to finish), K.Kim vs. (2) Ferrero, (6) Srichaphan vs. Okun, (5) Safin vs. (WC) Lu, Youzhny vs. (4) Schuettler, Nieminen vs. (7) Dent, Lu vs. (3) Nalbandian, (8) Hrbaty vs. Sanguinetti, and H.-T. Lee vs. (Q) Tsonga. Fish Out of Water at ATP Delray Beach Mardy Fish is finding it hard to live up to expectations after winning the silver medal at the Athens Olympics. Wednesday night the American's slump continued with a three-set loss in the second round to unseeded Ricardo Mello "Yellow" of Brazil, a tough set-back on the eve of representing the U.S. in the Davis Cup semifinals against Belarus. "I've been struggling a little bit in the past couple of tournaments with my second serve," said Fish, who threw in some key double faults in the third set. "I think I hit my first serve pretty well, but my second serve I struggled on at key times in the match...He's a counter-puncher. He's pretty quick and he plays a lot of balls. It's a pretty straight-forward kind of match. He doesn't really hurt you with anything, he just makes you play that extra shot." Other winners on the day in second round action were (3) Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic (d. (Q) Delic), Denmark's Kenneth Carlsen (d. Phau in three), and Frenchman Jerome Golmard (d. countryman De Chaunac). On tap for Thursday are Salzenstein vs. Goldstein in an all-American, Jeff "The Lizard King" Morrison vs. (Q) Armando in an all-American, "Grinning" Greg Rusedski vs. (Q) Boeker, and (1) Spadea vs. Blake (Spadea leads meetings 3-1) in an all-U.S. Defending Champ Sanchez Spanked at ATP Bucharest No. 8 seed and defending champ David Sanchez of Spain was spanked 6-3, 6-0 Tuesday by Argentina's Jose Acasuso in second round play at the ATP stop in Bucharest. "Yes it was a good victory," Acasuso confirmed after handing out the bagel. "It was really very good and I am very content. He was the defending champion and the year before he beat me in the semifinals, it was another chance to see if I could win." Three players advanced on the day in (4) Igor Andreev (d. Kohlschreiber), France's Paul-Henri Mathieu (d. former No. 2 Corretja 6-1 in the third), and Spanish veteran Felix Mantilla (d. countryman Calatrava). "It was a tough match," Mathieu said after beating the veteran Corretja. "I didn't play so well but I think I gave it a good fight and that's what I want. Even if I didn't play good it gave me a lot of confidence for the next match." Ouch, never good when you're the former No. 2 beaten by the precocious youngster who then goes to the "I didn't even play well" card. On Thursday's schedule is (Q) Gasquet vs. (7) Volandri, Hanescu vs. Koubek, Di Pasquale vs. (2) Mayer, and (6) Ferrer vs. (Q) Djokovic. Returning Runner-Up Rubin Rocked at WTA Bali Hoping to capitalize on last year's runner-up effort at the WTA stop in Bali, No. 5 seed Chanda Rubin's tournament came to an abrupt end Wednesday when the American was dismissed 6-1, 6-4 by Italian comer Tathiana Garbin. Garbin is one of the few players with wins over former No. 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne this year. Two additional shockers were delivered on the day when Japanese qualifier Aiko Nakamura ousted countrywoman (3) Ai Sugiyama, and Indonesian wildcard Angelique Widjaja gave the home crowd something to cheer about with a three-set win over (8) Jelena Jankovic. "It was pathetic," said the normally-reserved Sugiyama. "I should have performed well." Other winners Wednesday were (4) Nadia Petrova (d. Morigami who retired in the second set with injury), (7) Gisela "Sgt." Dulko (d. Flavia "Of the Day" Pennetta in three), and unseeded Korean Yoon Jeong Cho (d. Kristina "You're a Fine Girl" Brandi in three). Matches on tap for Thursday are Myskina vs. Camerin, Stosur vs. Kuznetsova, Widjaja vs. Barna, Kuznetsova/Sanchez-Vicario vs. Vento-Kabchi/Widjaja, Garbin vs. Bartoli, Marrero vs. Petrova, and Nakamura vs. Weingartner. Here's Christy Lemire from the AP: "A wise philosopher once said, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." Or maybe that was Ali MacGraw. In "Wimbledon," Kirsten Dunst says, "Love means nothing in tennis --- zero." Not quite as memorable a line, but that's what poses for philosophy in this by-the-numbers romantic comedy set in the tennis world."...Gustavo Kuerten said he is undergoing new medical tests to decide if he needs more surgery on his hip. Kuerten underwent surgery in February 2002. "My lack of physical form has been an obstacle, but mentally I feel good," the 28-year-old Guga told Channel News Asia. "The idea of surgery has surfaced because I worked enough this year and I didn't get the results I'd hoped for...I'll play a little so that (the doctors) can see what my limitations are. But at Wimbledon, you get put in the Roehampton Institute, you get shoved away at the back in Aorangi Park and you don't get to see what the top players are like."...The injured Andrei Pavel has been included in Romania's Davis Cup squad to play Canada later this month.
