And to my left -- a hottie.Gaudio Survives Match Point in Opener at ATP Estoril

Defending French Open Gaston Gaudio, already reeling from being fed a bagel this claycourt season by wunderkind Rafael Nadal, was almost dealt another blow to his dirt psyche Monday in Estoril where the No. 2-seeded Argentine was forced to fight off a match point in a 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-0 win over unhearalded Czech Jan Hernych.

"The first match at a tournament is always difficult," Gaudio said. "But being so close to losing, I'm really happy I was able to turn around the match. I had only seen him play once at the Australian Open and I didn't think he could play that well on clay. I didn't play my best tennis, the conditions weren't easy as it was really windy."

Other winners into the second round Monday were Spaniards Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (d. Karlovic) and Santiago Ventura (d. Muller from a set down), and Czech Michal Tabara (d. Berdych from a set down 6-1 in the third).

The final round of qualifying was also completed Monday, with four more into the main draw in Frank Condor (ESP), Tomas Cakl (CZE), Galo Blanco (ESP), and Frantisek Cermak (CZE).

On tap for Tuesday in Estoril are (1) Moya vs. Mantilla in an all-Spanish, the unseeded former No. 1 Ferrero vs. Marcos "Bombs Over" Baghdatis, Costa vs. (5) Massu in an all-grinder, (WC) MacHado vs. Calleri, Calatrava vs. (3) Joachim "The Jackhammer" Johansson, (8) Feliciano "F-Lo" Lopez vs. former French runner-up (WC) Alex "Hold My Retirement Party Already" Corretja in an all-Spanish, Mathieu vs. (7) Novak, Juan Ignacio "The Spitting Snake" Chela vs. (LL) Marin, Sanguinetti vs. (Q) Condor, (4) Robredo vs. (Q) Cermak, (Q) Cakl vs. Carlsen, and (Q) "Julio &" Galo Blanco vs. Montanes in an all-Spanish.

Rain Cancels Monday Play at ATP Munich

Torrential rains cancelled all play on day one at the BMW Open in Munich, with Tuesday featuring a full slate of ticket-worthy match-ups.

Organizers are fretting as more rain is predicted during the week. Tuesday's play will include all eight seeds in action.

Dokic Crashes Out in Opener at WTA Estoril

Currently at No. 450 on the WTA Rankings, one wondered if former No. 4-ranked Jelena Dokic had hit rock bottom and could only go up during the claycourt season in her first event after a seven-week hiatus.

One would be wrong.

That question was answered Monday at the WTA claycourt stop in Estoril where the troubled Serb with the wacky dad fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the opening round to the Ukraine's Alyona Bondarenko.

"I went from a ranking of 4 to 444," Dokic said. "I need to start at the beginning, like I did when I was 14 or 15. At this stage I need match confidence."

The 22-year-old former Wimbledon semifinalist said consistency is her biggest problem.

"I'm not so frustrated, more disappointed," said Dokic, who was so flustered she passed on the traditional handshake at the net after her loss. "When I was able to rally and put pressure on her, I was winning -- but I couldn't keep that up. It was all up and down for me, but that happens. I have to learn from this and try to move on. I had my chances and I didn't take them -- I beat myself today."

Other winners on the day were No. 6 seed Dally Randriantefy (d. (WC) Silva) and unseeded Aussie Nicole Pratt (d. Ant. Serra Zanetti 6-1 in the third).

Scheduled for Tuesday on the dirt at Estoril are Diaz-Oliva vs. Gloria, Pennetta vs. Savchuk, Schaul vs. Safina, Krajicek vs. Beltrame, Cohen-Aloro vs. Li, Dulko vs. Foretz, Parra Santonja vs. Cervanova, Safarova vs. Ruano Pascual, Nagyova vs. Zheng, Marrero vs. Muller, Czink vs. K.Bondarenko, Mihalache vs. Craybas, and Sanchez Lorenzo vs. Osterloh.

Two More Russians Into Main Draw at WTA Warsaw

No main draw action at the WTA stop in Warsaw Monday, with the final four players into the main draw after the final round of qualifying.

Advancing to the big dance Monday were Russian Maria Kirilenko (d. Pastikova from a set down), the Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko (d. Chladkova), Russian Anna Chakvetadze (d. Talaja), and Czech Zuzana Ondraskova (d. Perebiynis).

Top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo pulled from the event with an abdominal injury sustained last week in practicing for the Fed Cup.

On court Tuesday are Kosinska vs. Hantuchova, Clijsters vs. Perebiynis, Henin-Hardenne vs. Chladkova, Razzano vs. Domachowska, Farina Elia vs. Pastikova, Vento-Kabchi vs. Schiavone, Maleeva vs. Dechy, Vakulenko vs. Chakvetadze, Douchevina vs. Ondraskova, Kirilenko vs. Benesova, Sucha vs. Ivanovic, and Koukalova vs. Smashnova.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
Britain's The Times Online on Rafael Nadal: "And Spaniards sense a great triumph. They have revered tennis heroes before, but not on this premature scale. Sergi Bruguera would have been barely recognised as he walked down the Ramblas before winning back-to-back French Open titles in the mid-1990s. Then again it was regularly observed that while Bruguera may have had the eyebrows of Paul McCartney, he also had the personality of a death-watch beetle."...At No. 7 on the ATP Rankings, Rafael Nadal is now the top-ranked Spaniard, ahead of No. 9 Carlos Moya...Andy Roddick will hold his Champions for Charity gala tonight in Austin, Texas, benefiting underprivileged and at-risk kids in the Austin area. "I think it's so great that somebody as young as Andy is already giving back to the community," said Sir Elton John, who will feature at the gala along with model Cindy Crawford and actress Ali Landry, among others (we hope). "I'm very proud of him."...Andy Roddick speaking to the Houston Chronicle on low-profile coach Dean Goldfine being so likable, as opposed to other former, well...here's the quote: "He's very hard working and just a great guy all around. You won't find anybody who doesn't like Dean."...From the New York Post: Tennis heartthrob Andy Roddick has lost some juice on his first serve since his breakup with Mandy Moore. When former First Lady Barbara Bush visited the ace the other day in the player's lounge at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston, she asked about the state of his love life. He responded by telling her it was "slumping." Could this mean a future date with one of the (Bush) twins?" Yo, why you all up in his business Barbara? Damn...Lleyton Hewitt, who hasn't played an ATP match since March 7 in the Indian Wells final where he was hammered by Roger Federer, will skip Rome next week and make his claycourt debut in Hamburg...Gaston Gaudio is one person waiting for Rafael Nadal to fall out of his tree: "At the moment he is playing with lots of confidence and taking advantage of that but as soon as his confidence starts to go and he starts playing worse, then of course we will be able to find weaknesses. I hope it will happen the same way this year and I can beat Nadal in the final (at Roland Garros) -- that would be nice." Wha? Beating Nadal in the final of the French? Hey Gaston -- baby steps. Your first goal should be to stop getting fed bagel sets by Nadal, much less beating him...The Tennis Channel touches down on Comcast in the Los Angeles area in May...Dunlop has signed a four-year racquet and clothing deal with "Grinning" Greg Rusedski. Hey Dunlop, we hear Wayne Arthurs is looking for a deal too, keep shooting for the stars...Rafael Nadal's five career titles put him in an elite group of players to capture five in their teen years, with the Spaniard now in with Jimmy Arias, Jimmy Connors, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe, Yannick Noah, Guillermo Perez-Roldan, Andy Roddick, and Pete Sampras. Now Nadal can close on those who won more than five as teenagers, including Michael Chang (6), Lleyton Hewitt (7), Andrei Medvedev (8), Andre Agassi (10), Boris Becker (12), Mats Wilander (13) and Bjorn Borg (16).
