Safin, Coria Struggle, Nadal Cruises at ATP Rome

No. 2 seed Marat Safin and No. 9 Guillermo Coria struggled to three-set wins Tuesday on the dirt at the ATP Masters Series-Rome.

Safin dropped the first set against Jiri Novak in a tiebreak before finding his rhythm to storm back 6-1, 6-1. Coria won the first set in a tiebreak against Chilean pounder Fernando Gonzalez before dropping the second, then winning 6-4 in the third.

"I don't know what happened (in the first set)," Safin said. "I think I was a little bit overconfident and tried to finish the first set too fast. I started to make some mistakes and lost my confidence."

The Italian wildcards had a day Tuesday, with David Sanguinetti saving three match points in a 7-6-in-the-third win over Max "The Beast" Mirnyi, and Potito Starace ousting the shoulder-addled No. 7 seed Carlos Moya in straight sets.

"(The shoulder) bothers me on every single shot," Moya said. "It was much better than Saturday, though. Now I have a week off and then I'll check how it is in Hamburg for the French."

Other seeds sent home were (8) David Nalbandian (l. to Santoro in three) who was still recovering from his Munich win, and (13) Tommy Robredo (l. to (Q) Benneteau, bagel in the second) coming off his final is Estoril.

"I had that match won," Nalbandian said after his loss to the Frenchman Santoro. "I was 4-3 up, 40-15 and serving but it just escaped me. It was incredible."

Other seeded winners were (3) Gaston Gaudio (d. Beck), (5) Rafael Nadal (d. Youzhny, bagel in the first), (11) Guillermo Canas (d. Pavel), (12) Ivan Ljubicic (d. O.Rochus), and (15) Radek Stepanek (d. Ancic in three).

Clijsters Romps, Zvonareva Leads Exiting Seeds at WTA Berlin

While Kim Clijsters can't stop voicing her dislike for the claycourts, you could never judge it by her play, with the former No. 1-ranked Belgian blowing out Ukrainian qualifier Yuliana Fedak 6-1, 6-0 Tuesday at the WTA stop in Berlin.

"Everything felt pretty good...I felt like I was going for a lot of winners," said Clijsters, who reiterated her dislike for the dirt. "It is tough for me to play good tennis like on other surfaces and that is challenging."

In addition to struggling with the "Spanish Slide" on the red dirt, the No. 11-seeded Clijsters says generating more topspin and more of her own pace on the clay puts additional stress on her surgically-repaired wrist.

Other seeded winners on the day were (6) Nadia Petrova (d. Koukalova), (10) Elena Likhovtseva (d. Klosel), and (13) Jelena Jankovic (d. Obziler).

Three seeds were booted Tuesday in (5) Vera Zvonareva (l. to Peschke, bagel in the second), (9) Nathalie Dechy (l. to Randriantefy), and (15) Daniela Hantuchova (l. to Dulko).

Dinara Safina, the unseeded little sister of Australian Open winner Marat Safin, led the youth movement with a straight-set win over another teen, Serbian pin-up girl Ana Ivanovic. Other unseeded winners were China's Shuai Peng (d. Vento-Kabchi), Germany's Julia Schruff (d. Chladkova from a set down), American Meghann Shaughnessy (d. Prusova from a set down, 7-6 in the third), Israel's Ana Smashnova (d. Kostanic), and Russian Maria Kirilenko (d. Zuluaga).

Italy's Virginie Razzano and American Jill Craybas were halted for the day by rain at one-set all, while postponed to Wednesday was (12) Justine Henin-Hardenne vs. Iveta Benesova.

Scheduled for Wednesday in Berlin are Kuznetsova vs. Maleeva, Schruff vs. Myskina, Smashnova vs. Mauresmo, Sharapova vs. Groenefeld, Henin-Hardenne vs. Benesova, Razzano vs. Craybas (to finish), Clijsters vs. Safina, Henin-Hardenne or Benesova vs. Kirilenko, Bovina vs. Daniilidou, Martinez vs. Dulko, Pierce vs. Likhovtseva, Medina Garrigues vs. Schnyder, Jankovic vs. Pennetta, and Shaughnessy vs. Randriantefy.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
With ATP CEO Mark Miles stepping down at the end of the year, word is the ATP is still considering dividing his duties between two people. Insert audio file here: South Park's Eric Cartman saying "That is freakin' weak." Why not just make all the 450-odd employees part-CEO, then everyone can be 1/450th CEO and vote every time you need to change the toilet paper in the bathroom...Kim Clijsters says the claycourt season is the worst-court season for her surgically-repaired wrist: "Playing on clay is the hardest thing for a tennis player, especially for me because I have had this wrist problem which required surgery. My game is best suited for hardcourts but on clay it gets a lot difficult because you have to use a lot of spin while playing and the (two-handed) backhand has to be brought into use very often. I have to be very careful because I am the type of player who likes to play tennis in a particular way, but on clay it is very demanding because there are long rallies to deal with due to the slow nature of the surface. If something further happens to it (the wrist), that could be it."...The best wrong headline Tuesday came from Reuters: "Roddick to face Agassi as top seeds win in Rome" Huh?...Australia's OnthePunt.com tennis betting site with a harsh view of some of the American tennis sites: "ATP TOUR: Good database and great for all your ATP propaganda, but one of the most inept "official" websites of any major world-wide sport. Wake up!!; JON WERTHEIM MAILBAG (CNNSI): Posted every Monday, a highly readable and intelligent look at the week gone by and all the issues concerning the game; TENNIS REPORTERS: All-American view from one the biggest press fat cats on the tour, Matt Cronin (yes, you've read his predictable trash on the Grand Slam websites) -- Ouch, get ready for TR.net to rip the punters a new one...Sky Sports commentator Leif Shiras: "I don't think (Rafael) Nadal has any big weapons, he just reads the game well." If "reading the game well" means "ripping forehand winners left and right," then we agree. Nice observation Leif, go pimp that sunglasses sponsorship...The Tennis Channel Open in Scottsdale is getting booted from its site at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort, and needs to find a new home. "They are planning to expand the tournament quite a bit and beyond what the resort's tennis complex can really handle," Princess Resort spokesperson Jennifer Franklin told the Arizona Republic. "It has been a popular event and the Princess Resort was proud to host the event. Their plans to grow are fantastic, but we have seven courts here, and I think they need more than that. We're not going to be building more tennis courts here." The Tennis Channel founder Steve Bellamy says the best offers for a new site are coming from outside Arizona...Andre Agassi on the growing legend of Rafael Nadal: "You just don't see it as often. Everything is backwards. He hits the inside-out lefty forehand nasty. He plays a real physical game, similar to how (Thomas) Muster used to play, but defends the backhand way better, passes much better and while his serve doesn't seem to be tremendously effective, it is."...On Tuesday the ITF announced the Davis Cup World Group Qualifying September match-ups: Ecuador at Austria, Belarus at Canada, Pakistan at Chile, Germany at Czech Republic, Spain at Italy, Sweden at India, Britain at Switzerland (look for Club Fed to return), and the U.S. at Belgium (get ready for the clay). Roger Federer said he will play against Britain after bailing on the team this year in the first round of World Group play: "I will play and I am delighted to support the Swiss team against Britain. Hopefully I contribute to keep the Swiss team in the World Group of next year's Davis Cup." Like to you contributed to putting them in the qualifying? U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe says Andre Agassi is not yet in for the September qualifying tie: "I haven't spoken to Andre yet about this particular match," P-Mac told the AP. "There's a lot of tennis to be played in the next four or five months, including three Grand Slams, so I think a lot of that has to play out. By early in the summer, I should have a read on Andre's interest level. I think he'll be pretty upfront with me about that...Am I worried? No. Do I understand that it's a difficult match? Yes. It's certainly a match that we're going to have to go into and be very intense to come out of there with a win. But we're certainly capable of doing it."..Russia has chosen clay for their next Fed Cup encounter with the U.S...How did that huge Nike insignia suddenly appear on Rafael Nadal's capris? Could that thing be bigger?
