Serena Williams punished Taiwanese teenager Yung-Jan Chan 6-1, 6-3 in her opening-round match Monday at the US Open.
Williams, hampered by a slow-healing knee injury, looked tentative in the early-goings of the match and in the second set.
"I was playing really flat and lazy so I said, 'OK Serena, let's pick it up and play,'" Serena said. "I feel awesome. I feel I have no pressure."
The 1999 amd 2002 winner could face sister Venus in the fourth round, and next faces Colombia's
Catalina Castano.
"It was definitely a concern, a disappointment," said Serena earlier in the week on potentially facing Venus. "But I think whoever wins that match -- I don't know. I'm just focusing on my first opponent. I'm not really looking that far ahead."
The younger Williams sister's knee injury was the result of an earlier ankle injury, part of a wave of injuries that have sidelined the top players on the WTA Tour.
