Pavel, Hanescu Into Quarters at ATP Bucharest

Posted on September 16, 2005

Romanians (3) Andrei Pavel (d. (Q) Marach from a set down) and (4) Victor Hanescu (d. Sanguinetti) rounded out the seeds into the quarterfinals on the dirt Thursday at the ATP stop in Bucharest.

"I didn't expect such a short match but it was difficult," Hanescu said. "Sanguinetti is a very smart player, he knows how to play and he's difficult to play."

Unseeded players into the quarters on the upset tip were Spanish qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo (d. (6) Acasuso) and Germany's Florian Mayer (d. (8) Verdasco), both in straight sets.

"I feel so good. I played really, really good today and I'm so happy," said Ramirez Hidalgo after upsetting the defending champion Acasuso. "I went onto the court being very relaxed and I had nothing to lose and I played unbelievable."

Lining up for the Friday quarterfinals are (1) Puerta vs. Andreev, (4) Hanescu vs. (Q) Ramirez Hidalgo, Mayer vs. (3) Pavel, and (7) Mathieu vs. Serra in an all-French.
