Serena Blotted by Sun in Stunner at WTA Beijing

Serena Williams' downhill slide picked up speed Wednesday at the WTA stop in Beijing, with the American appearing near tears as she was straight-setted by a player ranked outside the Top 100 in China's Tiantian Sun.

Serena saved four match points in an error-strewn display that eventually ended at 9-7 in the second-set tiebreak.

"I played terrible," Serena said. "I never expected such a tough match. She hit some great shots. I'm still struggling a bit with my left knee but I'm disappointed not to have performed better."

For Sun, who hadn't beaten a Top 50 player until this year's US Open, the Top 10 scalp in front of the home fans was a breakthrough.

"I never expected to win," Sun said. "It's definitely a breakthrough but it's not a miracle. I played the way I always play. It will give me a big confidence boost."

It was the second first-round loss of the year for the younger Williams sister, who went out first round on clay at Rome to Francesca Schiavone.

Another Chinese produced an upset when wildcard Jie Zheng toppled (6) Jelena Jankovic in three sets, and Japan's Shinobu Asagoe upset (7) Tatiana Golovin in straight sets.

No. 9 Anna-Lena Groenefeld was the only seeded winner on the day, breezing past Japan's Ai Sugiyama.

Other winners Wednesday were Israel's Shahar Peer (d. Douchevina, bagel in the second), Poland's Marta Domachowska (d. Shaughnessy), and China's Shuai Peng (d. Diaz-Oliva 7-6 in the third).

On court Thursday are Kirilenko vs. Nakamura, Sharapova vs. Peer, Zheng vs. Domachowska, Llagostera Vives vs. Venus, and Craybas vs. Asagoe.

Mirza Bagels Then Balks at WTA Kolkata

The WTA stop at Kolkata lost its main attraction Wednesday when No. 3 seed Sania Mirza made a stunning exit to little-known Hungarian Melina Czink.

Most shocking was the fashion of the loss, rolling through the first set 6-0 before dropping the next two 6-4, 6-4.

"It was just one of those days. I started really well but she improved a lot in the second set," Mirza said. "I managed to fight back well in the third set from 4-1, and the crowd really lifted me, but it just wasn't meant to be. Some days you win these matches, some days you lose them."

Mirza served up 10 double faults and a series of shaky unforced errors that handed the win to the No. 121-ranked Czink.

"I realized Sania was not as confident on court as she usually is," Czink said. "I told myself that if I lose, I will lose well."

Seeded winners Wednesday were (1) Anastasia Myskina (d. Gallovits 1-and-0), (2) Elena Likhovtseva (d. Fedak), and (7) Karolina Sprem (d. Dominikovic).

Indian fans took some solace on the day when Shika Uberoi upset No. 8-seeded Rika Fujiwara of Japan in straight sets.

"The support here this week has been amazing," said the Florida-based Uberoi. "It's something I've never had before, and I'm really enjoying playing in front of the Indian crowd. I hope I can keep going in this tournament, it's my first quarterfinal."

Other unseeded winners were Russian Galina Voskoboeva (d. Azarenka), Austrian Sybille Bammer (d. Pratt), and Estonian Kaia Kanepi (d. (WC) Ruano Pascual 6-1 in the third).

On tap for Thursday in Kolkata are Sprem vs. Castellvi, Rao vs. Likhovtseva, Camerin vs. Bammer, Voskoboeva vs. Myskina, and An.Serra Zanetti vs. Arvidsson.

Peschke Punked at WTA Portoroz

No. 125-ranked Frenchwoman Severine (the former Beltrame) Bremond scored the upset of the day Wednesday at the WTA stop in Portoroz, ousting No. 3 seed Kveta Peschke 6-0, 6-4 to gain her first WTA quarterfinal of the year.

Seeds advancing into the quarters were (4) Klara Koukalova (d. Kloesel from a bagel set down), (6) Katarina Srebotnik (d. (Q) Bachmann), and (8) Roberta Vinci (d. Ondraskova).

American Meilen Tu won her first-round match, besting Tunisia's Selima Sfar in straight sets.

Scheduled for Thursday are M.Zec Peskiric vs. Medina Garrigues, Henke vs. Bychkova, Tu vs. Benesova, and Ani vs. Daniilidou.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
According to the AP, Las Vegas is one of nine cities bidding to host the ATP Tennis Channel Open, formerly held in Scottsdale, with the event to be held Feb. 27...Max "The Beast" Mirnyi says he doesn't see those crazy Canadian fans getting out of hand in Canuck-land for the Belarus vs. Canada D-Cup tie: "It is a part of Davis Cup, and you come and you prepare for that, but Canada is little bit colder -- so the people are (cooler), too. I think from just the crowd perspective, we've been to a few countries where it gets a bit out of hand. From the tournaments I've played here, it's a very educated and knowledgeable tennis crowd, and the people here are very hospitable."...Roger Federer says as part of his work with the United Nations he would like to set up a tournament in Africa: "I plan to pursue the idea of promoting sport as a means of promoting peace and development. One idea could be a tennis tournament in sub-Saharan Africa. At present there is nothing much outside of Morocco."...From Star Magazine: "Naomi Campbell and tennis star Venus Williams are the newest members of the Paris Hilton posse. At the MAC Cosmetics/Rosa Cha afterparty, "Paris and Naomi sat next to each other the whole night, laughing and hugging," an eyewitness tells Star. "And Venus and Paris exchanged telephone numbers.""...Sergi Bruguera and his shoulder-length hair think the Italians are crazy to host Spain on clay in their Davis Cup World Group qualifier: "For Italy to choose to play on clay is amazing to me. I think now they have very little chance to win."...The British press is going crazy over Roger Federer, who probably has never seen Andy Murray hit a ball, throwing a compliment to the youngster: "Andy Murray is clearly a talent. I hadn't really heard of him until Wimbledon this summer, when he reached the third round, but he has had some good results since then and I think that the Swiss team have to watch out for him." Hey Brits, remember player Rule #17 -- always talk up an opponent right before you're ready to hand out an ass-whipping...Jim Courier says Brit D-Cup captain Jeremy "Master" Bates needs to put Andy Murray on court for the first day of singles: "What is imperative is that Andy plays this match. I know that Jeremy might be thinking of saving him for later in the tie, but he has to be tested against the best and this is trial by fire of the best kind. While Murray is the prohibitive underdog, the experience he is going to gain in the long run is the important factor. I feel the passion he brings to the court. Fear would be the first reaction of most people to a match like this, but I don't sense that in Murray. He has to be spot-on perfect and hope Federer has an off-day, sure, and there are physical issues with him (Murray), but they can wait until he stops playing this year."...SI.com's Jon Wertheim with the U.S. D-cup inside call: "Speaking of [James] Blake, looks like he and Andy Roddick will be playing Davis Cup singles this weekend, as [Robby] Ginepri didn't make the trip to Belgium. Presumably, coach Mac made the decision in advance, so the player left out could prepare for the fall season without spending the week on the bench in Belgium."
