Ljubicic Clinches Cup Spot, Roddick Wins at Paris

Croat Ivan Ljubicic clinched the eighth and final spot at the year-ending Masters Cup Friday in Paris, eliminating fellow contender and No. 14 seed Tommy Robredo 6-1 in the third set while at the same time top seed Andy Roddick eliminated No. 10 Dave Ferrer 7-6 in the third, and unseeded Tomas Berdych beat contender and No. 7 seed Gaston Gaudio 6-0 in the second set to finalize the eight-man field in Shanghai.

"It's an absolute dream come true," Ljubicic said. "This is what I have been aiming for the whole way. After winning a Grand Slam, I think this is the biggest achievement as you have to play well for the whole year to reach this goal...I played the tour event in Shanghai in 1999. I can only imagine what the center court will be like for the Masters Cup. I think the Chinese are probably the best organizers in the world and it will be an amazing event to play in. I will fly there probably on Monday or Tuesday and I can't wait to get there."

Ferrer, who earlier this week showed his indoor acumen with a win over Tommy Haas, held two match points against Roddick but couldn't close the deal.

"I got out there and it was just stiff," said Roddick who suffered from a sore back during the match. "It got progressively worse the more I moved. I just didn't feel real comfortable for the whole match."

Roddick said his participation in the Saturday semifinals is in doubt.

"I wish I could give you a definite answer," Roddick said. "If I had to play in an hour, I wouldn't be able to but a lot can be done from now until then."

Also a winner was No. 8 seed Radek Stepanek who ousted shoulder-ailing No. 3 seed Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets.

On tap for Saturday in Paris are (1) Roddick vs. (6) Ljubicic, and (8) Stepanek vs. Berdych, and in the doubles Hrbaty/Johansson vs. (4) Knowles/Nestor, and (3) Black/Ullyett vs. (2) Bryan/Bryan.

Dementieva Clinches Final Champs Spot at Philadelphia

No. 4 seed Elena Dementieva recovered from a shaky start to defeat unseeded Czech Kveta Peschke Friday at the WTA stop in Philadelphia, securing the final berth for the WTA Championships with a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win.

"I was just so happy," Dementieva said. "I was just trying to play very aggressive and go for the winner. Now, I know that I'm in L.A. and I'm really happy about it."

Also into the semifinals were WTA Championship qualifiers Amelie Mauresmo (d. Washington) and Nadia Petrova (d. Sucha), and racing teen Nicole Vaidisova who recorded her 18th consecutive win with a victory over Lisa Raymond in straight sets.

Matched in the Saturday semifinals are (6) Petrova vs. (4) Dementieva in an all-Russian, and (3) Mauresmo vs. (7) Vaidisova.

Dechy Rebounds for Semi Berth at WTA Quebec City

Top-seeded Nathalie Dechy rebounded from a first-set loss Friday at the WTA stop in Quebec City, defeating Canadian wildcard Stephanie Dubois 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 to advance into the semifinals.

Also into the semis were (3) Marion Bartoli (d. Perry, bagel in the first), (6) Amy Frazier (d. Nagyova), and (8) Sofia Arvidsson (d. Vesnina 6-1 in the third).

Lining up for the Saturday semifinals are (3) Bartoli vs. (8) Arvidsson, and (1) Dechy vs. (6) Frazier.

TENNIS-X NEWS, NOTES, QUOTES AND BARBS
First-round losers this week at the Challenger in Boston were Jan-Mike Gambill, Scoville Jenkins and Amer Delic...Marcos "Bombs Over" Baghdatis pulled from the Aachen Challenger this week with a leg injury...From the ever-stoic Justine Henin-Hardenne website: "Justine announced on Monday that she qualified to the WTA Championships, but due to injury had to forfeit her berth. She will nonetheless be visiting Los Angeles to do goodwill, and promotional duties for the event next weekend. Justine won't be on court playing tennis, unfortunately for fans, but will be in Los Angeles next Friday November 11 till Sunday November 13 for the WTA. She was quoted earlier on Monday in her press conference that there was a likely chance that she would travel to Los Angeles, if the WTA required her presence."...From The Daily Telegraph on Australian fun couple Lleyton Hewitt and Bec Cartwright: "Bec Cartwright struck a deal worth a reported $1 million with Woman's Day for exclusive rights to all things Lleyton Hewitt and herself but so far she hasn't given them much for their money. The former Home and Away star -- due to give birth in less than five weeks -- has written her first of a series of columns for the ACP publication. But don't hold your breath for anything juicy about her marriage to tennis superstar Hewitt -- Cartwright's tales of her morning sickness are about as good as it gets. "My pregnancy's been mostly smooth sailing -- after a bit of an uneasy start," she writes. "In the beginning so many things would make me sick, especially coffee. But I'm lucky I haven't had to make too many lifestyle changes -- I hardly ever drink and I don't smoke, so I haven't had to give anything up." Riveting, mate...From Tennis Week: "Cliff Drysdale will be logging frequent flier miles next week. The voice of ESPN's tennis telecasts will cover both the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles and the ATP's season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai. When the WTA Tour Championships conclude on November 14th, Drysdale will hop on a plane and head to Shanghai to join analysts Patrick McEnroe and Brad Gilbert for ESPN2's coverage of the Tennis Masters Cup." That's contrary to word on the street that Cliffy, Patrick and Brad will actually be holed up in a trailer in Bristol covering the event via the video feed -- and showing the semifinals and final of the Masters Cup on tape -- boo!...The Financial Times Simon Kuper trying to cover tennis: "Six years later [Lindsay] Davenport is back at number one. Next week she can seal the spot for 2005 at the season's finale, the Masters Cup for the world's best eight players, in Los Angeles." Doh! Either the Masters Cup has been moved, or Lindsay will truly compete with the big boys this year...Cara Black speaking with Daily Tennis on doubles on the WTA Tour: "We have meetings with the WTA where we ask them not to do what the men are doing. I think it's going to fall that way...Everybody plays doubles. Everybody relates to doubles. If it would just be promoted."
