Gonzo Guns Down Grecian at ATP Vina del Mar Posted on February 1, 2006
No. 2 seed Fernando Gonzalez kept the homecountry Chilean flag flying Tuesday with an opening-round win at the ATP claycourt stop in Vina del Mar, defeating Greece's Vasilis Mazarakis 6-1, 6-2.
"I felt real well today," said Gonzalez, who is coming off a shoulder injury, after clubbing his No. 120-ranked opponent. "My service was functioning well again."
Other seeded winners were (3) Jose Acasuso (d. Navarro Pastor) and (8) Boris Pashanski (d. Saretta from a set down), while Czech qualifier Leos Friedl ousted (7) Carlos Berlocq from a set down.
It was the first main-draw singles effort for the doubles star Friedl since 2001, and only his second ATP singles win.
Four other un-seeds advanced into the second round Tuesday in Spaniards Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo (d. countryman Almagro after getting bageled in the first) and Santiago Ventura (d. Capdeville in three), Costa Rican Juan Antonio Marin (d. (Q) Armando), and Italy's Alessio Di Mauro (d. Garcia from a set down).
Scheduled for Wednesday on the dirt are Ventura vs. (6) Montanes in an all-Spanish, (1) Gaudio vs. Ramirez Hidalgo, (5) Massu vs. Marin, and another all-ESP in (Q) Cuadrado vs. (LL) Gimeno-Traver.
