No. 2 seed Fernando Gonzalez kept the homecountry Chilean flag flying Tuesday with an opening-round win at the ATP claycourt stop in Vina del Mar, defeating Greece's Vasilis Mazarakis 6-1, 6-2.

"I felt real well today," said Gonzalez, who is coming off a shoulder injury, after clubbing his No. 120-ranked opponent. "My service was functioning well again."

Other seeded winners were (3) Jose Acasuso (d. Navarro Pastor) and (8) Boris Pashanski (d. Saretta from a set down), while Czech qualifier Leos Friedl ousted (7) Carlos Berlocq from a set down.

Scheduled for Wednesday on the dirt are Ventura vs. (6) Montanes in an all-Spanish, (1) Gaudio vs. Ramirez Hidalgo, (5) Massu vs. Marin, and another all-ESP in (Q) Cuadrado vs. (LL) Gimeno-Traver.
