Roddick v Haas, Fish v Spadea at ATP Houston

Posted on April 14, 2006

Three more Americans joined top seed Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals of the ATP claycourt stop in Houston Thursday in wildcard Mardy Fish (d. Schuettler by walkover due to illness), No. 7 seed Paul Goldstein (d. (Q) Jenkins), and unseeded Vince Spadea (d. (WC) Baghdatis who retired with a lower back injury).

"I don't really know what it is yet," Baghdatis told reporters regarding his malady. "Maybe the nerve is squeezed. I just felt pain coming down through my leg. Maybe fatigue has something to do with it. Since Australia I've been playing all the time, working hard. I haven't wanted to stop."

The 31-year-old rappin' Spadea improved to 11-9 on the year with the win, and will next face his countryman Fish.

"Mardy has a different style of game -- not a typical claycourter -- so it could be a tricky match," Spadea told reporters. "I can't let him dictate too much."

Also into the quarters were Austrian Jurgen Melzer (d. Daniel), and Spaniards Fernando Vicente (d. (Q) Dupuis) and Al Montanes (d. Behrend).

Friday's quarterfinal match-ups are Melzer vs. Vicente, Spadea vs. (WC) Fish (Vincenzo leads career meetings 3-0), (1) Roddick vs. (5) Haas (Roddick has won last three), and (7) Goldstein vs. Montanes.
