The seeds went tumbling in second-round play Wednesday at the WTA stop in Strasbourg, with Germany's
Martina Muller ousting No. 1
Patty Schnyder, China's Li Na upending No. 3
Nathalie Dechy, and Russian
Elena Vesnina delivering a sound beating to No. 5
Marion Bartoli 6-1, 6-1.
"I don't know what happened today," Schnyder said. "I just couldn't get into the match. I didn't have any feeling for the court today. At least I got one more match under my belt before Roland Garros."
Seeds advancing into the quarterfinals were (2)
Nicole Vaidisova (d. Bacsinszky), (4)
Anabel Medina Garrigues (d. Nakamura 1-and-0), (7) Zheng Jie (d. Domachowska), and (8)
Jelena Jankovic (d. Smashnova in three).
China's Peng Shuai was the only winner in all-unseeded play Wednesday, straight-setting German
Julia Schruff.
On tap for Thursday in Strasbourg are Muller vs. Peng, Medina Garrigues vs. Vesnina, Zheng vs. Vaidisova, and Jankovic vs. N.Li.
