Myskina, Peer Square Off in WTA Istanbul FinalPosted on May 27, 2006 Top-seeded Anastasia Myskina held off unseeded Dutch prodigal teen Michaella Krajicek 6-2, 7-6(5) Friday to advance to the final of the Istanbul Cup.
"I'm a lot happier today with my match than yesterday," said Myskina, through to her first final of the season. "Krajicek hits the ball harder than Castano, which I like, so it was easier for me to play my game. I'm glad that I played here this week, as it's given me a lot of confidence for Roland Garros." In the final the Russian will face hot-handed Israeli and No. 4 seed Shahar Peer, who upended No. 2 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld of Germany 6-0, 6-2. "She has a very good serve so my game plan was to neutralize that, make her move and stay aggressive," said Peer after the efficient display. "It is my second final in three weeks, so obviously I'm happy with the way I'm playing right now. It gives me a lot of confidence for Roland Garros." It was the first win over a Top 20 player for Peer, who earlier this year won small titles at Pattaya City and Prague. Myskina won the only career meeting between the two in three sets last year at Amelia Island. The doubles final will be all-unseeded with Sania Mirza and Alicia Molik facing Alona Bondarenko and Anastasia Yakimova. |
