No 1 v No 2 Seed in ATP Bastad FinalPosted on July 16, 2006 Top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko advanced to his third final of the season by recording a 6-3, 6-3 win over Agustin Calleri in one hour, 17 minutes at the Synsam Swedish Open in Bastad.
Davydenko used his usual consistency from the baseline to defeat Calleri, who won only 29 percent of the points in his second serve while being broken in four of nine opportunities. The 25-year-old Monte-Carlo resident is currently in a career-best INDESIT ATP Ranking of No. 5. Davydenko, who defeated Andrei Pavel in the Poertschach final to claim his sixth career-title, also reached the final in Estoril (l. Nalbandian) and semis in Rotterdam (l. Stepanek) and Sydney (l. Blake). The Russian will take on Tommy Robredo, who overcame Jarkko Nieminen 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour, 50 minutes. The Spaniard dropped the first set 6-3 but quickly opened a 4-0 lead in the second. In the third set Robredo trailed by 2-4 before storming back and winning the next four games. Robredo, 24, reached a career best ranking of No. 7 in May and like Davydenko, will be playing in his third ATP final of the season. The Spaniard reached the final in Barcelona (l. Nadal) before claiming his career-first ATP Masters Series title in Hamburg (d. Stepanek). Robredo, who improved to 42-16 in the season (16-5 in Bastad), trails Davydenko 1-0 in their head-to-head series. In their lone career meeting, the Russian defeated the Spaniard 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the Roland Garros quarterfinals last year. -- ATP |
