Ferrero Flounders Against Portas at Umag

Posted on July 25, 2006

Albert Portas toiled for almost three hours and finished around 1 am to upset second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 7-5 to reach the second round in Umag Monday. Portas, who had just one win in six career meetings with Ferrero, served 14 aces and claimed five breaks of serve to win just his second ATP-level match since the first week of May, when he reached the Estoril semifinals.

Portas reached the Umag semifinals in 1999 (l. Tarango) but has failed to pass the second round in four subsequent appearances.

Portas next meets Czech Jan Hernych who enjoyed a 6-2, 6-1 win over Italian qualifier Flavio Cipolla. Playing his first tournament since a first-round loss at Wimbledon, and his second tournament since reaching the 's-Hettogenbosch final (l. Ancic), Hernych improved to 12-15 on the year.

Czech Lukas Dlouhy upset Frenchman Julien Benneteau 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Dlouhy won just his sixth match in 23 attempts at ATP level this year.
