Agassi, Roddick, Remainder of Americans Exit LA Posted on July 29, 2006
Third seeded Fernando Gonzalez defeated Andre Agassi 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 in one hour, 48 minutes in the American's last appearance at the Los Angeles event.
Agassi, a four-time Los Angeles champion (1998, 2001, 2002 and 2005), finished his career at the hard court event with an incredible 36-7 mark.
"It was a good match, a high standard," Agassi said. "I'm glad to be a part of that competition, that standard of tennis. He stepped it up and played some spectacular points to get it over the line finally."
Gonzalez, who is making his first appearance at Los Angeles improved to 28-14 in 2006.
This is the third time in the season that the No.1 Chilean reaches the semifinals of an ATP event. In Vina del Mar Gonzalez lost in the semis to countryman and eventual champion Nicolas Massu while at the ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo he fell to World No.1 Roger Federer in the same round.
Top seed Andy Roddick had to pull out of the Countrywide Classic with a back injury.
The American, who was coming off a final appearance at Indianapolis (l. Blake), suffered a minor back injury in his second round match against countryman Scott Oudsema on Thursday.
Roddick was scheduled to play Russia's Dmitry Tursunov.
Sixth seeded Tommy Haas also moved into the semifinals by dismissing American Paul Goldstein 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 25 minutes, and No. 7 seed Dominik Hrbaty beat No. 4 Robby Ginepri 7-6(0), 6-2.
The 28-year-old German won the Los Angeles title in 2004 (d. Kiefer) and has a career record of 11-3 in the event. In 2006, Haas has captured two crowns in February -- at Delray Beach (d. Malisse) and at Memphis (d. Soderling). After slumping a bit following a wrist injury in April, the German has won 11 of his last 15 matches. -- ATP
