Serb Riser Djokovic v Melzer in Metz Final
Posted on October 8, 2006Austria's No. 1 player Jurgen Melzer and Serb teen Novak Djokovic posted wins Saturday in the semifinals at the ATP stop in Metz to advance to the final, the third final for each player, both 1-1 in championship matches in 2006.
Melzer beat French wildcard Macq Gicquel 7-6(3), 6-3, and looks to add a second career title after winning his first three weeks ago in Bucharest.
In the final Melzer will face No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic, who beat French crowd favorite Sebastien Grosjean 6-7(4), 7-6(1), 6-3 in two hours and 44 minutes.
In July Djokovic won his first career title at Amersfoort and was runner-up at Umag a week later.
Djokovic has won 33 matches this year, the most of any teenager.
Melzer also moved into the doubles final with partner Julien Knowle as the No. 3 seeds, beating Frenchman Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut 10-2 in a match tiebreak. On Sunday they will face unseeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Fabrice "The Magician" Santoro, who shocked the top-seeded all-Polish team of Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 10-6 in a match tiebreak.
