ANDY RODDICK

Q. Talk about just coming from Washington, couple of days, how difficult is it to start first round again, although it's a Masters Series, a big week?
ANDY RODDICK: It's tough. I actually did the same thing in '05 and wasn't able to get past the first round. It's different. They use a different ball for whatever reason. It's a little tough
You know, I was able to get through.

Q. Easy first set, then tougher second set. Clement is tough, he's beaten you in the past. Talk about him as a first opponent.
ANDY RODDICK: It's tough, you know. He's made a living on this tour being able to figure out ways to win matches. He started being a lot more aggressive playing higher risk in the second set.
You know, I was just able to kind of hang around long enough, win a couple points in the breaker. It was definitely a tale of two sets.

Q. You won before on hard court, but you lost twice on clay. Was it because of the court or just a coincidence?
ANDY RODDICK: I don't know. It was a long time ago. You're asking me to remember matches from five years ago right now, so...
I don't know, I mean, he's probably more comfortable on clay than I am. I'm sure there were other factors as well.

Q. How has having Jimmy Connors as your coach helped you?
ANDY RODDICK: It's helped a lot. When we got together, I was a match away from dropping out of the top 20, and now I'm sitting here at 3. It's been a pretty significant difference.

Q. Why do you choose to play in Washington before a Masters Series?
ANDY RODDICK: Why?

Q. Yes.
ANDY RODDICK: Well, I like the conditions there. I feel like this is probably my best time of the year. I like that tournament, you know. I've been able to do it successfully before. It's ju

Q. Heading into the Open later on in the month, do you feel like your game is progressing at a point where you feel confident it's going to peak at the right time?
ANDY RODDICK: I hope so. But I've said time and time again, I wish I could control when I peaked. I kind of just go out with the mentality I want to try to play well on a daily basis.
I kind of take the attitude in the summer, you play well one week, that will give you a chance to play well the next week, so on and so forth. Before you know it, hopefully you're further along
Right now it's going okay.

Q. Lleyton and James talked about how fast the court is here in Montréal. Do you find it fast as well?
ANDY RODDICK: Yeah, you know, it's a little different than Washington. I feel like the balls were faster in Washington, but I feel the court's a little bit slicker here. Like I said, it's toug
Maybe I'll be a better judge after the next one.

Q. It's Roger's birthday today. Is this something you guys pay attention to?
ANDY RODDICK: It's Roger's birthday today?

Q. Yes.
ANDY RODDICK: Hmm, I don't know. I mean, I guess we'd have to be more on top of it to figure out when it's someone's birthday because obviously I was ignorant to the fact it was Roger's birthda
I don't know. I don't feel like that goes on a lot. Especially if someone has a match to play, I don't think you want to maybe screw around with them too much before a match.

Q. A question about Davydenko. He's been the subject of conversation. How do you guys feel for him, what he's going through in the center of that storm right now?
ANDY RODDICK: Well, I think you just try your best to reserve opinion until it's all said and done. You could either feel really bad for him or you could feel like he got what he deserved. But
