Dementieva Back in Top 10 After WTA Dubai Title Posted on March 2, 2008
Russian Elena Dementieva improved to 9-11 in career tour finals Saturday when the No. 8 seed came from behind to defeat No. 2-seeded Russian compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 for the title at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships.
Dementieva will move back into the Top 10 after the win, her ninth career.
"The whole week I had such a bad draw," said Dementieva, who during the week also beat world No. 3 Ana Ivanovic. "This tournament is really popular and so everyone had it like that, but I'm just happy I was able to play my best at the end of the week. In the past I was playing Paris and Antwerp and so I didn't make it here, but I heard so many good things about it from the other players and I came this year. And I have no regrets."
Kuznetsova drops to 9-14 in career finals.
"I'm very disappointed," Kuznetsova said. "I had all sorts of chances today but I just couldn't take them. At the start of the match we were pretty even, but as the match went on my level kept dropping lower and lower. I began to try going for winners too early in the points and that just didn't work against her."
In the doubles final the top-seeded team of Black/Huber beat China's Yan/Zheng 7-5, 6-2.
