Medina Garrigues Dons Fes Title in Morocco

Top-seeded Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues one-upped her runner-up result of last year is Fes, Morocco, on Saturday rolling over No. 6-seeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova 6-0, 6-1 for the title at the Grand Prix de SAR La Princesse Lalla Meryem.

It was the ninth career title for Medina Garrigues, who is now 9-5 in career finals. She was forced to save three match points in her second round match against Klara Zakopalova.

It was a career-first final appearance for Makarova, who had never before advanced beyond the quarterfinals at a tour event.

Median Garrigues has won tournament titles in Palermo four times (2001, 2004, 2005, 2006), Strasbourg three times (2005, 2007, 2008), and Canberra once (2006). The Spaniard is projected to rise to a new career-high of No. 16.

After the singles final, Makarova then teamed with her countrywoman Kleybanova to win their first title as a team in doubles, defeating the top-seeded Romanian-Russian pair of Cirstea/Kirilenko 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
