Qualifier Haehnel Wins First Title at ATP Metz Posted on October 18, 2004
Qualifier Jerome Haehnel, who has spent much of 2004 toiling on the Futures and Challengers circuits, Sunday won his first title at the ATP stop in Metz with a 7-6(9), 6-4 win over French countryman and wildcard entrant Richard Gasquet.
"I don't know what to say. I can't think at the moment," Haehnel said. "This is great and unbelievable. The best moment of the week was today's match point. It was never ending, I just went for it because I didn't want to regret anything or do an unforced error."
Gasquet failed to capitalize on numerous opportunities in the first set.
"Jerome played really well, I had my occasions but he was there all the time and I couldn't do anything," said Gasquet, who blew five set points in the first set tiebreak, and was also playing in his first career final. "I am happy about this week. It was my first indoor tournament this season and my first career final, I can't be disappointed."
In the doubles final, No. 2-seeded Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Nicolas Mahut turned back Croat Ivan Ljubicic and Italian Uros Vico 6-2, 7-6(8) for their first title this year as a team.
