Former champion Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from the Australian Open with a right shoulder injury.
The 28-year-old has struggled with the shoulder since November of last year, has not played any WTA Tour events this year and also withdrew from a hurricane relief exhibition with
Maria Sharapova in Florida in December.
Capriati now joins Justine Henin-Hardenne (knee) and
Kim Clijsters (wrist) on the sidelines, with other possible withdrawals looming in
Serena Williams (abdominal injury) and
Amelie Mauresmo (abdominal injury).
Capriati won back-to-back Australian Open titles in 2001-02, and in her last appearance in 2003 lost in the first round.
