No. 5 seed Robin Soderling of Sweden, the only seed in action Monday at the ATP stop in Bangkok, weathered a strong effort from Czech Robin Vik in advancing 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

"I didn't start that well," Soderling said. "I was up 3-0 with a break point and he hit an amazing shot around the post and down the line and he started to comeback and won the first set. I was a little tense but the third set I was very happy the way I played."

Other winners into the second round were qualifiers Denis Gremelmayr of Germany (d. Karanusic) and France's Nicolas Thomann (d. D.Norman), and fellow un-seeds Yeu-Tzuoo Wang of Taipei (d. K.Kim) and Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (d. (Q) Fruttero from a set down).

Scheduled for Tuesday in Bangkok are (3) Ginepri vs. Udomchoke, (7) Paradorn "The Thai Fighter" Srichaphan vs. (Q) T.Chen, Muller vs. Mark "The Dud Scud" Philippoussis, Kucera vs. (6) Nieminen, and Bastl vs. (WC) Murray.
