Chileans Gonzo, Massu Hot at ATP AucklandPosted on January 11, 2006 The Chilean Davis Cup team led the winners Tuesday at the ATP stop in Auckland, with top-seeded Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez (d. (LL) Horna) and unseeded Nicolas Massu (d. (4) Dominik "The Dominator" Hrbaty) posting straight-set wins to move into the second round."I played very good," said Massu, rebounding from a 2004 stress fracture in his foot and enjoying the large contingent of Chilean fans in Auckland. "It's very nice to have Chileans all around the world." Other seeded winners on the day were (2) Dave Ferrer (d. (Q) Luzzi), (6) Olivier Rochus (d. Montanes), and (7) Jarkko Nieminen (d. Baghdatis), while Spain's Al Martin ousted (3) Robby Ginepri 6-2 in the third. Ginepri struggled with numerous unforced errors during the match, and was punished for trying to force a net game that failed to pay dividends. Unseeded winners were Belgian Christophe Rochus (d. Acasuso), American journeyman Paul Goldstein (d. Volandri who retired with illness), qualifiers Jan Hernych (d. Pavel) and Ivo Minar (d. Moodie who retired with a shoulder injury) of the Czech Republic, and Dutch qualifier Raemon Sluiter (d. Bracciali). Wednesday's schedule in Auckland is (Q) "Everybody Loves" Raemon Sluiter vs. (2) Ferrer, Murray vs. (5) Mario "Baby Goran" Ancic, Christophe "The Roach" Rochus vs. Massu, (1) Fernando "Gonzo" Gonzalez vs. (Q) Minar, in doubles the Roach Brothers vs. Kerr/Parrott, (7) Nieminen vs. Goldstein, (6) Olivier "The Other Roach" Rochus vs. (Q) Hernych, A.Martin vs. Wawrinka, and Mayer vs. Vik. |
