Roddick, Hewitt Know the Way at ATP San Jose

Two-time San Jose defending champion Andy Roddick rebounded from a shaky second set to advance into the quarterfinals Thursday at the ATP stop in San Jose, in the third set finding his aggressiveness in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Kenneth Carlsen.

"With the exception of a bad four-game stretch, I competed really well," Roddick said. "I felt I did a lot of things well. In the third set I decided to try to take it to him more and hit harder and deeper."

No. 3 Lleyton Hewitt was the other seed into the quarters, easing past American qualifier Sam Warburg in straight sets.

"I still feel it out there," said Hewitt on his gimpy ankle. "I really felt it when I jammed it about four times. But it's just something that I have to work through."

Unseeded players into the Friday quarters were Aussie Wayne Arthurs (d. (7) Tursunov in three, setting a meeting with Hewitt), German Bjorn Phau (d. (Q) B.Wilson), Swede Robin Soderling (d. (WC) Philippoussis), Scotland's Andy Murray (d. Wang), and Belgian Kristof Vliegen (d. (Q) Gimelstob 6-1 in the third).

Featured Friday in San Jose are Vliegen vs. Spadea, Arthurs vs. (3) Hewitt in an all-Oz showdown, the resurgent Soderling vs. Murray, (1) Roddick vs. Phau, and in doubles Fisher/Phillips vs. (WC) Bjorkman/J.McEnroe.
