Roddick, Hewitt, McEnroe Win at ATP San Jose

Top seed Andy Roddick had an easy time with Bjorn Phau 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals Friday at the ATP stop in San Jose, but a potentially difficult first-time meeting looms Saturday in the semifinals in the form of Brit-Scot Andy Murray.

Murray, who appeared to be hobbled during the match by his ankle which was wrapped in a support, nonetheless came back from a set and a break down to defeat Swede Robin Soderling who lost his nerve after some stellar early play in a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 affair.

"His first serve was very good," Soderling said. "He's got a good game when he's playing his best but he'll have to return extremely well when he meets Roddick."

Roddick has done his own bit of scouting on Murray, who plays a lot like Roddick's nemesis Lleyton Hewitt who he is 2-6 against. Roddick and Murray have never played each other in an ATP match.

"He never plays himself out of a point," said Roddick on Murray. "He's very solid, he's got good energy. I like the way he plays."

Also lining up a meeting on Saturday were No. 3 seed Lleyton Hewitt, who defeated Aussie compatriot Wayne Arthurs 7-6(4), 6-2, and unseeded American Vincent Spadea who outlasted Belgium's Kristof Vliegen 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.

"The guy I play tomorrow is a pretty big nightmare," Spadea said of facing Hewitt, who he is 0-4 against. "I've never beaten him so that will be tough."

In doubles highlights, unseeded John McEnroe and Jonas Bjorkman beat Ashley Fisher and Tripp Phillips 6-1, 7-5 to advance into the semifinals against No. 4 seeds and non-household names Jaroslav Levinsky and Robert Lindestedt.

"I know anything can happen but then again you can still dream even at (age) 47," McEnroe said. "I couldn't pick a better place to come back. I love this area, and I loved the crowd support."
