Myskina No Peer for Israeli Champ at Istanbul

Israel's Shahar Peer threw in her hat as an outside threat for this year's French Open, on Saturday defeating former Roland Garros champ Anastasia Myskina 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) to win her third title of 2006.

The No. 4-seeded Israeli recorded only her second career win over a Top 20 player Saturday, fighting back with Myskina serving at 5-4 and 6-5 in the third set.

Peer is now 3-0 lifetime in finals and will make her Top 30 debut on the WTA Tour Rankings.

Myskina falls to 10-7 in finals, and was treated on-court during the match for aggravating a right forearm muscle strain.

"My arm started to hurt in the second set and so I was having trouble holding the racquet," Myskina said. "It was natural for her to hit to my forehand, but I just kept fighting. I came close today but not close enough. However, I made the final here, so I'm really happy with my week. I started the match well and I was pleased with my game so that is a positive sign going into Roland Garros."

In the doubles final, Alona Bondarenko and Anastasiya Yakimova won their career-first doubles titles, beating Sania Mirza and Alicia Molik 6-2, 6-4.
