Massu Beats Moya for Amersfoort Semi
Posted on July 22, 2006Olympic gold medalist and fourth seed Nicolas Massu reached his fourth clay court semifinal of the season with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Carlos Moya at the Dutch Open Tennis in Amersfoort Friday. The Chilean is now just one win away from his fourth final of the season, having earlier won the Costa do Sauipe title and been a finalist in Vina del Mar and Casablanca.
Massu leveled his career record against Moya to 2-2 and avenged a third-set tie-break loss against the Spaniard earlier in the year in Buenos Aires. Taking advantage of Moya's poor first-serve percentage (54%), Massu broke serve four times and was also rock solid on his own second serve, winning 77 percent of points (in contrast to winning 61 percent of points on his first serve).
Spaniard Ruben Ramriez-Hidalgo continued his banner season when he advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over countryman Alberto Martin, who was chasing his 200th ATP match win.
Ramirez Hidalgo, No. 62 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, advanced to his second ATP-level semifinal of the season, improving his win-loss record to 16-10. The 28-year-old reached the Vina del Mar semifinals and Buenos Aires quarterfinals during February's South American swing.
Ramirez-Hidalgo, who won just five ATP-level matches last year, is likely to surpass his career-high ranking of No. 60 when the new INDESIT ATP Rankings are released Monday.
Top seed Guillermo Coria kept his service yips in check as he defeated fellow Argentine Agustin Calleri 6-3, 7-6(4) to reach his first semifinal of the year. Coria served just five double faults and won 54 percent of points on his second serve, a vast improvement to the 29 double faults he served up in the first two rounds.
Coria, who last week lost to Jose Acasuso in the first round of Bastad in his first tournament in nearly two months, is now 11-10 on the season. In 2005 he won 55 matches and in 2003 he won 60 matches.
