Roddick Returns from Set Down to Beat Gasquet

Posted on October 13, 2006

No. 3 seed Andy Roddick overcame talented Frenchman Richard Gasquet from a set down 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3 Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at Vienna.

"I came out of the first set thinking this is trouble because I felt like I hit the ball pretty well and still got on the bad end of it," Roddick told Reuters. "He was able to hit some shots that not a lot of people can."

Second-seeded David Nalbandian also advanced with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oliver Marach, while No. 4 seed Marcos Baghdatis wasn't as fortunate falling 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 to Austrian Stefan Koubek.

"I was just too nervous at the beginning and needed a set to settle down," Koubek said. "I was surprised myself that I could turn the match around."

Also among the seeds, No. 8 Novak Djokovic was ousted by Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 6-3.

Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who lost to Djokovic in the Metz final, defeated Polish qualifier Lukas Kubot 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
