Gasquet in All-French Final at ATP LyonPosted on October 29, 2006 No. 4 seed Richard Gasquet will bid for his third title of the year Sunday at Lyon against French countryman Marc Gicquel in a first-time meeting.
In the semifinals Saturday, Gasquet beat 2000 titlist Arnaud Clement 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-1, and Gicquel advanced to his first career ATP final after upsetting No. 7 seed Xavier Malisse 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(5). The 20-year-old Gasquet has won 25 of his last 33 matches since mid-June including two titles. And if he wins Sunday, Gasquet will be the youngest player with three ATP titles this year. Novak Djokovic, at 19 years of age, is the youngest player with two crowns this year. Gasquet is playing in his fourth final of the year. He was runner-up to Federer at Toronto in August. He also joins Roger Federer as the only players to have reached finals on all four surfaces this year: hardcourts, clay, grass and indoor carpet. Gasquet has a career record of 3-3 in finals and a 4-1 record in Lyon, making his debut four years ago at the age of 16. Gicquel is having the best year of his career by far, with a record of 17-10. Before 2006 he had a career ATP mark of 5-5. Malisse was a runner-up at Lyon in 2004 -- one of eight finals he has lost. The Belgian's only title came at 2005 Delray Beach. |
